Forums - Nintendo Discussion - By looking at gaming’s past we can see Nintendos future: Why they will dominate this gen

I hope that they will attract every gamers and casuals!

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Like Reggie said, they'll go deeper and wider with U.

Nintendo Network ID: Cheebee   3DS Code: 2320 - 6113 - 9046

The Nintendo Wii was a rejigged NES with a similar controller and with similar accessories -> Gun/Balance board/controller, only this time the gun and controller were merged. The Wii U is attempting to follow the success of dual screen gaming on the DS/3DS.

The magic behind the Wii was that people were willing to pick up the controller and play with it and they had games which accommodated this. It is nearly impossible to get the older generation of people to pick up an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller but it is possible to do this with the Wii.

One idea behind the Wii U is to have a self teaching controller so that Nintendo can get over that initial hump with people by having the controller tell people how to use the controller.

Tease.

So the past have showed us that they will not dominate if we take the game cube and n64 for an example.

And even when the Wii u is many launch titles i only can see two which drive hardware sales right now.

Super Mario Bros Wii U andmonster Hunter for Japan.

Many games at launch doesnt mean big sales. The vita has showed us that. The vita have more than 20 games on launch and it only managed to sell good the first 2 or 3 weeks. It dioesnt depend if you have 20 ported games it depend if you have 3 or 4 killer ips on your sleeve.

So in the end wait for the first year of sales before you talk from domination.

Your casual dismissal of the GC's outstanding library disappoints me.

There's a very good chance the Wii U will win the next generation, but I have to take issue with some of the arguments the author of the original article makes.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but honestly this hardcore vs. casual is so incredibly counter-productive and misleading.

From the original article: "In the end the casual market would not be enough to continue Nintendo’s Console dominance around the World."

The casual market is the ONLY thing that will allow Nintendo (and any other console for that matter) to dominate around the world. Why did PS1 win? The most "casual" players bought it. Why did PS2 crush everything in site? Again, "casual" video game players adored it. And the same goes for the Wii. By definition, the most popular console is the most "casual."

Too little too late from them. Failed to attract the casual crowd. Song loyalist were there along with some hardcore gamers and what not. But look at the hour. They are late to the show.

Why proof do we have that the Wii U will succeed with the casuals? The launch price of the Wii U is effectively $100 more than the Wii if you consider the fact that the basic model doesn't come with any games and the system itself doesn't have a Wii Sports equivalent. I counted the Wii as a $200 console plus Wii Sports which most people wanted anyway whereas the Wii U comes in at $299 naked.

Tease.

@squill
The wii launched at 249 with a 20$ game and one remote.
The wiiu is 329 with a game and likely past Nintendo pwners have wiimotes.
Id say the price is comparable for past owners, and for new owners 70$ more with a tablet. All they keed for casuals is a jew wiifit really.

Spurgeonryan, I think that was obvious sarcasm on JOKA's side - just showning how 2006 prediction like that (that would have way more sense considering 2 superb previous generations for Sony) would be quite foolish.

Wii pretty much lost most of casual gamers (quite a few to Kinect, some to social and mobile gaming, some were into game(s) just for this generation never to return again) and honestly, I don't see them coming back in large numbers (actually I think casual market on (classic) consoles will shrink next-gen). As for "hardcore", as in Xbox/PS "hardcore" (and "midcore") - no, I don't see them moving away from their systems - they already (and will) provide same (or much more) than Nintendo offers, so there is not much sense for shift there (as was for PS->Xbox shift this gen).

And then there's that tablet thingy - now, I'm more than willing to give Wiimote to my 6 year old kid, but that tablet - no way (well, pretty much same thing with my 74 year old dad, just for other reasons). And considering how Wiimotes are not coming packaged as default, and that WiiU is centered around what is pretty much classic console controler (with added tablet), I don't see that audience (which was significant part of Wii's success) being that important this time in equation.

All said, and as someone who prefers Sony when it comes to consoles, my bet is (as explained several times why) on Microsoft to "win" next-gen, with Sony and Ninty fighting for 2nd place.
