Farm subsidies.

Not only would it save us all kinds of money.

Food would become cheaper.

We definitely could make cuts in the military, but not defense. Those two are often confused for the same thing, but they're not. It's not "defense spending" to build a billion dollar embassy in Baghdad or pay $40 million for air conditioning tents in Iraq. We shouldn't be invading other countries so often, so the cost of not occupying so many places around the globe would produce significant savings. Then maybe we could even afford to re-open some of the bases here within our own borders. Heaven forbid!

We could also do some giant trimming to welfare. A bag of Funyuns or $7 Edy's half gallons of ice cream shouldn't be allowed to be purchased with food stamps. If you're so destitute that the government has to pay for your food (by which I mean people who work and are involuntarily taxed) then you should be on a diet of eggs, milk, butter, cheese, bread, rice, beans, and maybe cheap cod or something until you're able to get back on your feet. But the abuse of food stamps has just gotten way out of control, and we could save a LOT of money in that program alone just by cutting people out who are abusing it, and NOT harming people who are actually destitute and rely on the program to survive.

Actually it would make food more expensive, and drive thousands of farmers out of work driving the cost up more. You cannot make decent money off of farming anymore unless you are a mega farm. The smaller farms need the subsidies to be able to plant next season's crop.

The problem is abuses to the system. And it costs money to add oversight to make sure these abuses are not being done. But in the long run it should save money. Something else that would save money is centralizing the oversight since right now their are several departments that watch Sallie Mae and a lot of times they don't agree so nothing gets done. And they don't want their powers taken from them.

Just to add to the above post, I see quite a few people come through and pay for McDonald's food with their welfare debit card. They are very noticeable .

Truth.  The only trouble is, I do wonder what would happen to the supply of food if those giant corporate farms stopped getting funded by the Dept of Agriculture and actually had to rely on the true free market of supply and demand to survive.  If some of those giant farms closed up shop, would we begin to see a renewal of family-owned farms again in this country?  I think that would be lovely.

Almost all of the subsidies that come from the Dept of Agriculture go to the giant corporate farms.  That's the only reason those "mega" farms make decent money.  The pretty little portrait most people have of the family-owned farm being driven asunder isn't necessarily the case.

at the very worse it would make food prices go up less than the amount of taxes that would be returned.  The market is more efficient at setting prices than the government.

Definitely military funding here in the states... every time I hear about the cost of anything to our country, I think of it in terms relative to the defense budget. It makes everything a little funnier.

The UK should cut foreign aid to countries that dont need it. We still give India money and yet they have a space program. WTF! Welfare spending should be cut too. I sick of seeing chavs get money for nothing when they have no intention of working. Also if the UK quit the EU that would save us billions a year too.

Well, people just need to cut their EU bashing... The EU is not in real trouble. Some national States are in trouble. The Situation is far more complex that it is shown in debates or in the media. To be honest, the overall quality of the debate is so awful that it is not worth listening. The far right and the far left parties are trying to get the attention of the masses... and their arguments are very one-sided and do not show the full scale.

But regions stop all military intervention to save all money. But European countries should give less aid to other countries as well, as they can't afford it!
