More good news for the people who have preordered many consoles for their resale value. Like me. I hope every store runs out of preorders.

Or maybe shortage is created by people like you buying many consoles thinking they will get a lot of money off it. With rumors of the console selling out, there is high demand amongst resellers like you, but is there high enough demand amongst the REAL customers for resellers to turn a profit ?

BTW, Nintendo could easily trick people like you by offering a limited amount of consoles for preorder, then flooding the market with stock on launch day.

So you really think nintendo would care to trick me? I am honoured.

Around the Network

Well if you think you're not just one of tens of thousands of people who preorder for resale, you're quite mistaken, that's a really widespread practice. For example with spectacle and gigs tickets, in the UK there are several companies hiring hundreds of people equipped with hundreds of credit cards to get as many tickets as possible and resell them at double price.

This grey economy of mass resale is a widespread phenomenon hurting consumers and hurting the public image of companies, so yeah they try to fight that.

Sure thing, mate. They do get the same price from me and my peers as they do from "legit" customers. They don't care.

That's not how economy and marketing works. People have a finite amount of money they can spend. You can work on marketing to convince people to spend a greater share of their money on your products than they normally would, and the most effective way to maximize sales is marketing where the sale takes place. But whatever you do, there's a limit to what people can spend.

Problem 1 : If the console is bought to a shameless reseller on ebay, you obviously can't do anything to drive sales of games and accessories or do any effective marketing at all.

Problem 2 : If the reseller forces people to buy at higher than the price you set, that's that much money people won't be able to spend on games and accessories.

No matter how you turn this, money that goes into resellers' pocket is money that can't into your business' pocket, so you are definitely losing if you don't fight that.
