Forums - Gaming Discussion - The problem of hyping unreleased games

Tagged games:

I think this is a pretty stupid topic. I dont see anything wrong with hyping up games regardless of how well they do critically. If I see a game and like it then I have all the right to try and hype it up - you may not agree with me or think me an idiot for being interested in that particular game but regardless I can say and do whatever I want to support that game. It is up to OTHER people to decide whether they agree with what I am saying or not but really, why the hell should I care whether some listens to my hype or not or buys a game based on it and doesnt like it. Its really up to that person to do the math and find the info on the game.

A lot of the guys against hyping in this thread are going on about overhyping, that they dont want hyping about games that later have lower reviews than expected. WTF. How do you sell games, especially sony who seem to come out with new IPs often, if you dont hype. We have already had some games that havent sold as much as sony would like and some seem to suggest that there should be LESS hyping. Personally, imo there can never be too much hype. In fact maybe there should be a hype thread in the forums for each console.

You seem to talk as if it were your job to make these games sell.

Fans: This game is awesome, buy it.
Victim: This is is garbage, and all the peer reviews agreed.
Fans: Well, %^&* you, too.

And, that's how to get more people to like your console of choice.

That game had some followers from the start not that many I grant you that but I remember people following and laughing with some horrible animations.

Oh come now, you're telling me that people laughing at horrible animations is enough to call a game overhyped?  You may have a point that it happens less with Sony titles, but obviously there are still hidden gems and there are good reasons to think something might be awesome when the first few reviews say exactly that.  So what made you think that the Swan game was going to be a 7.8 meta after the first few reviews were 9's?  At that point I'd call your prediction more unlikely than someone saying it looked like another hidden gem.

My point is that the game even had some fans from the start...    What was so great about the swan from the start except an special look?  People this days are already hyping up games for just having some nice looking art;..(aka a lot of 2d games the recent years)..

What interested me in The Unfinished Swan was the initial tech demo of a white world that you had to work your way through by revealing the environment with paint, the minimalist art style, and then I became even more excited when I played it at E3 and found out that it wasn't a one trick pony and different levels would have you using the paint in different ways in different areas.  All of that with a cool somewhat sad story about Monroe and his deceased mom and I couldn't help but be excited.

Your turn now, what reasons are there that Swan didn't seem so great from the start?

Why is it a problem?

You get people excited and thought the game will be worth every penny and more and you end up selling the crappy game to people that trust you to point them to some good games.

Take, for example, this game called Army Corps of Hell for PSV, http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-vita/army-corps-of-hell

It has a meta score of 57. That's way before an average game score of 80/100.

I remember seeing this game (among others) being praise numerous times on VGC alone, way before PSV was released. It was even called some sort of killer app by some members.

This problem seem to affect all platforms but the majority are on Sony platforms.

When you sell bad games to people, they'll end up hating the console because you sell them bad experiences. You end up dooming the console that you love. The cycle goes and you ended up dooming yourself.

So, please, stop dooming yourself. You know who you are.

There's also the problem of anti-hype, but that calls for another thread for another time.

It's a problem, but it won't go away.

Marketing firms hire people to make false accounts on forums. These accounts develop followings or trust in the community and then at the appropriate time they hype games.

What happens if the hype cant reach high enough.

I have that problem with Halo 4. Theres so much hype now. But its not enough. I am thirsting for more hype, but just cant get no more hype.

Microsoft I'll sell every other gaming thing apart from a controller and an Xbox ten give you the funds that makes just to get Halo 4 now. And then play online early. For the next 2 years.

Bluntly speaking, I think you would be far better off trying to find something to put your heart into more, than a Microsoft product.  Halo 4 isn't all that and a bag of chips.  Other FPS do things that Halo doesn't.  Microsoft has release schedules for reasons, and logic behind them.   A game should stand on its own merits, with hype to get the word out.  Beyond this, you are trying to convert people religiously.  As for myself, I did get some interest in Halo 4, but Microsoft fails to deliver bots, so it is a pass for me there.  Sorry, I don't play on line.  Borderlands 2 is enough for me.  Heck, why not play something else until Halo 4 is ready?

????????????????????????????????????????????

Woe woe woe.

Obviously VGC is not a great place anymore.

Next week I'll secretly try Te Last Of Us in here. Watch how many flock and go gooey.

Mate its got bugger all to do with Microsofts bit of plastic. Its friggin Halo. I love Halo. In fact ......................

Whats the point.

This thread is about the negative affects of hype.  And you came out and said MORE is needed.  I was calling you on this.  You have a partisan console agenda in how you post.  You may like Halo, but you show this repeated trend for hyping about every single Microsoft IP, from Alan Wake to Forza.  You have a counterproductive agenda.  And yes, watch the buzz behind The Last of Us go on here to.  It will be more hype, justified or not.

Your one of those people that have a special pair of glasses on, where you believe everyone should see things your way and those glasses randomly put make believe images to certain aspects of the picture you see.

You have te nerve to post about someones counter productive agenda but fail to look back through the thread and realise you have the largest counter productive agenda here.

I'll let yourself and others care to read through the thread with your special glasses taken off.

I wont bother trying to explain anything of the humour of my posting in this thread originally. But again you wont see that without taking off your special make believe glasses.

Care to tell the world what my "agenda" is?  I would be curious to hear you think my agenda is.  If you can't even name it, then you don't even know what it is, and you are blowing smoke.  It is, "I know you are, but what am I?" nonsense.  So, go ahead and tell people what the heck my agenda is.  Again, if you can't then you don't have a clue and are blowing smoke.  Well, ok, maybe your agenda is to pretend to be a Microsoft fanboy for giggles.  That is fine.  If that was the case, I am sorry for taking you seriously and thinking you were.

If it is this thread alone, as opposed to why post on forums, then you see my point has been that individuals with console bias, will end up shilling EVERYTHING on their console, because they seek to convert others to their console of choice.  It is religious devotion and doesn't do anything to help.  It does correspond pretty well with the original post, by the way.  Of course, you are free to disagree here and say, "Nah, shilling for a console of choice is a GOOD thing".  Mmm'k I guess.

Isn't this game also on the PSP? Why would it be a killer app for the Vita? I NEVER heard anyone say that and I was pretty active around the forums at that time. Do you have proof to backup your claims?

selnor telling people they have special colored glasses on.

cute.
