Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Development "stretching Sony studios thin"

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/playstation-4-game-development-stretching-sony-studios-thin/

Interesting article because it pretty much confirms that we'll be seeing a PS4 release sometime next year. It also suggests that the PS4 will be another super-powerful console, similar to what they achieved with the PS3.

Unfortunately it sounds like they're having issues trying to support all 3 of their consoles at the moment - if I were them, I'd release whatever games they have in development for PS3 soon, focus on Vita for 2013 (PS4 should have a good first few months regardless of software), and then focus on PS4 (not forgetting about Vita though) during 2014 onwards.

What do you think?

That is actually a pretty negative article. Im surprised you draw anything positive from it. But lets look at it.

"Having difficulty supporting all 3 consoles" ? Vita is hardly prolific in its release, PS3 has a few big titles on the go and PS4 isn't even out yet.

There is nothing concrete in that piece at all. You and the reporter, who didn't even conduct the interview with Gara, and is merely guessing by reading between the lines of an interview he didn't even attend, have just drawn some spurious conclusions.

There is no evidence they are struggling, a "challenge to manage resources" is just business, that's how it is.
There is no evidence that is will be a "super-powerful console, similar to what they achieved with the PS3"
The evidence in that article actually points more to a 2014 release than 2013, so why do you say "we'll be seeing PS4 release sometime next year"

So the article is just a bunch of words where someone has interpreted the words of an interview in a different original article and your post is further interpretation of the second article. Chinese whispers.

Article:

Considering how Sony has priced new models of the PlayStation 3 going into Christmas, it’s clear that the company aims to have that machine as its primary focus for at least another calendar year.

They could really use the current profits gained from PS3, but not fully supporting the PS4 from start could be a worse investment for the future. Having another Vita similar launch woild probably hit them hard.

Hopefully they will solve this situation.

Edit: Hmm... I might want to reconsider after reading Kowen's posts...

Based on precedence (PSP and PS3), it's a given that Sony will struggle to support three platforms at the same time, because they have yet to prove that they can support two at the same time. Currently, they have to support two platforms (PS3 and PSV; they abandoned the PSP a couple of years ago) and one of them isn't doing well at all.

What should be expected is that Sony will focus on the PS4 and sacrifice the PSV, because that's what they did in the case of the PS3 and PSP. Perhaps third parties will start to carry the PSV like they did with the PSP, so that the handheld has healthy sales in at least one region (Japan).

Bottom line, I don't need an article (well written or not) to figure what's going to happen.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Biased reviews are a pleasure to read. Just my opinion, of course.

I think the author of that article is misinterpreting the facts. PS4 development is well underway - that alone strongly suggests that we're looking at a 2013 release

I think it wil be issued in 2013.  But the article clealry infers 2014.  So given he got that wrong, I'll pass on the rest.  He is no better than a forum poster, he has taken a CVG article and tried to interpret it... badly.

A super-powerful console should have a good first few months regardless of software ?

that worked wonders for the PS3.  The 3rd place this gen.

If this is true that Sony's next console will be super powerful, that means that it will either be very expensive, or will cause Sony to take massive losses on it. Sony has become unable to learn from their mistakes. This may be Sony's last console.
