Forums - Sony Discussion - The best hard drive to upgrade PS3 slim with?

Hey there

I am looking to upgrade my 120GB PS3 slim hard drive to either 320GB or 500GB (either is fine) Due to the overwhelming amount of games I have gotten from PS+ in the last 18 or so months (I hate deleting games even if I'm never going to play them)

I have looked around at online reviews and they are all so mixed, some say they work fine and some say they are noisy and slow down the PS3 system.

So I was basically wondering what hard drives you guys use in your PS3 and what ones you would reccomend, I would probably want to spend between £35 and £55 since I only need it to last another year and a half, until PS4 is released ;)

If you are looking for performance try a hybrid drive that includes a bit of SSD in it. That and 7200 rpms over 5200 which is what your current HDD is. There is a performance boost to load times and it can reduce the amount of pop ups in game. If you are a digital game guy this is a good route. You will have to pay a little more but you can still get a 500gb hybrid for $50 to $100.

Last week's episode of the PS Blogcast talked about it, mentioning their digital copy of borderlands 2 had significantly less pop up. It is known that Gran Turismo load times to race almost cut in half. Not every game will see a benefit so don't expect the world. The 7200 could be loader than your current HDD but you could be able to read reviews on particular drives and I know some people on here have such a drive. Ask ethomaz, he has one and I am considering doing the same soon.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Hey what's up man. Like you I wanted to upgrade a couple weeks ago, even made a post on vgchartz. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=148313&page=1#4

Anyway, this is the harddrive that you want. http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus-2-5-Inch-Internal-STBD1000100/dp/B007PG25UU

5400 rpm is the best for ps3, and at only $99 it's a steal! If you tight on cash just get the 720/500 gb version, 5400 rpm, with a 2.5 inch Serial ATA. I actually got mine at best buy because I needed some questions answered, but amazon has it for a bit cheaper.

Hope I helped :)

Unless you yourself have used the 7200, don't give misleading information. Three separate friends of mine all reported issues with the 7200 rpb HDD and most of the reviews I read state that it doesn't work very good with the ps3. (overheating/noise)

I've been using a 7200rpm drive for years and my PS3 is still fine. I'd say go for a 7200rpm, unless you really worry about these things.

Hey thanks for the reply, I actually only just discovered there was such thing as a hybrid HDD today (I'm kind of wishing i got one for my pc instead of an external), but yeah I'm kind of a performance freak so this would be a good option. Do you know is the PS3 installs the OS on the SSD part of the hard drive?

Hey thanks for the suggestion. The 500GB variant of that one has tons of good reviews, plus it says its quiet which is always a plus. How is it working for you so far?

Oh yes, what I said is misleading information. Seriously? Have you yourself used one? Sounds like just your friends have. The potential of the 7200 being louder or overheating is out there, but there are drives that work fine for people. Maybe there are just bad brands to go with for a PS3, that's why I recommend reading reviews or asking other people like Ethomaz who does have one.

Misleading information, bah!
