Forums - Sony Discussion - Vita’s fight for life: After almost a year, has Sony’s handheld managed to distinguish itself?

that ASS chick pic looks pretty good!

I'd say they are a company that knows it's best years are to come. Vita is not for me and I'm not buying it because of that but its highly unlikely it will fail. Psp was still selling strong in the past few years so I don't see why vita wouldn't. All it needs is a price drop and more games.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

To make things worse, Sony said they were likely to drop Vita price next year, thus dis encouraging gamers this year.

In the West it is a little trickier now. We have seen it with the 3DS and the Vita now and the PSP. We have different taste over here and tablets are through the roof on fire! People do not seem to care what they are missing as long as they have free movies, music and a quick game to play. AMong other things.

The problem many argue about tablets is while they are appealing they are not primarily used for games. True touch screen can do wonders for a game (see ninja gaiden) but buttons are really still a requirement for playing games. I don't know anyone who uses a phone for gaming as the first thought. Vita was really made for those who want console expiriences on the go. True stuff like angry birds is the example of what a handheld game should be but I don't imagine the audience psp targeted in the first place wanted to play that. Tablets are definitely having an effect though.

I think ur underestimating just how much people use their phones and tablets for games.

But lets look at on-the-go gaming scenerios. Taking the bus, riding in the car back seat, playing in between classes. These scenerios have the capacity to be long, but most likely youll want a bite-sized game to keep you busy in between point A and point B.

To me that is the problem with the Vita: its trying to offer a console experience in a market that is used to smaller ones. Because if your home, you might as well play a console or PC game. Outside, most people just want a pleasant distraction until they get to where they gotta go.

As Sony is seeing, the console gaming on the go market is very niche.

once sony drops price and kills the psp the vita will survive.

ps2 is alive in countries that cant afford much else. and sony doesnt even really support it anymore

but just like the psp with vita the ps2 ate into the ps3 sales. once sony started focusing on the ps3 dropped the ps2 and ps3 dropped (even the first price drop to 500 dollars) ps3 started selling well

That is the problem I have a whole room dedicated to my console experience given you a console experience on a handheld should never be thier primary concern. It should be a concern not doubt but that market is no where a big as they seem to think it is.

The sad fact is that phone tech. has caught up and updates much faster than game handhelds. The crowd Sony aims for Vita is settling on do it all solutions with their phones. Even ipod touch messes with Vita's sales. Nintendo saw through this and dramatically slashed prices, not by 50 but $80! And 3DS sold three times as much Vita at their $250 price point, yet still understood the market enough to make that drastic move. To make things worse, Sony is not helping themselves compete by charging 3-4x more for their proprietary memory.

How Sony is supposed to kill the PSP ? they don't make any games for it already, it has the support of the 3rd party developers and Sony is making profit with that, Do you want Sony to tell them please no more games on the PSP, so that they can target the next huge Userbase in Japan "3DS" ?!
