Forums - Microsoft Discussion - What’s inside Durango’s Alpha kit?

VGLeaks

We have some details about Durango’s Alpha kit and its components. Bear in mind that these “specs” aren’t final, the ones that Xbox 3/720/Next will have in its final design are bound to vary.

- 8 cores (x86 CPU)

- 12 GB de RAM (8 + 4)

The Alpha kit has 12 GB of RAM, rather than the 8 GB in the final design. The extra 4 GB of RAM facilitates development of console system software.

- DirectX 11.x GPU

The Alpha kit uses a discrete graphics card similar in capability and speed to the GPU that will be included in the final design. The card does not have the ESRAM that the final design GPU will.

- 50GB Blu-ray Disk drive

- HDD, etc

Also we have a list with the components supplied with the Alpha kit.

Alpha kit includes:

- Console build into a PC box

- HDMI cable

- Ethernet cable

- Wired Controller

There also is a separate package that contains:

- A special version of the Xbox 360 Kinect Sensor

- Power cable

- USB cable

- Kinect included if negotiated

You also will need the following items that are not included in the Alpha kit.

- Keyboard

- A monitor or TV that supports a resolution of 1080p and equipped with HDMI input for video and audio, or DVI input for video only

- USB thumb drive with a memory capacity equal to or greater than 2 GB

- Mouse (optional)

The Alpha kit is intended to OS depuration/creation and to give developers a first view of the system.

8 cores sounds like AMD Bulldozer or similar, because Intel don't make 8-core desktop CPUs. If this is true then it backs up SemiAccurate's assertion of XB3 and PS4 using AMD CPU+GPU.

Well, if this is true, nice to see Microsoft (as expected) listened to Epic/Crytek/Square and went for 8GB. Now just to find out if the that latest rumor about Tahiti level GPU is true or not.

On par with Wii U, then.

This sounds powerful ... And potentially expensive.

Around 800$ if you're buying PC with similar specs right now (7870 as GPU) - than again, it's not PC, they have massive discounts from manufecturer and it won't be out for at least another year - all considering, I'd guess  199$-249$ + 14.99$ per month for 2 years, with Xbox Live included. Maybe even less if they are willing to loose money initially like with 360.

I'm not sure whether it is an awesome plan, or the most stupid one.

Just because it works for phones, doesn't imply it will work for home consoles.

Wow that sounds extremely powerful, almost comparable to my new gaming PC!, which cost me £600. I'm a little surprised that blu-ray is included though, I though Microsoft was trying to avoid Blu-ray for download only

Prediction: Switch will sell better than Wii U Lifetime Sales by Jan 1st 2018

Doesn't imply that it won't either, why not try it out?

Well, considering they are testing this approach with 360, I'd say it's very plausible they gonna have some sort of subscription based offer in addition to regular model. Will it work...don't know, it just might - people just love when they see low prices on expansive stuff, deliberatelly pretending there's no hidden costs. ;)
