Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How much more powerful do you think the Wii U is compared to PS3/Xbox360.

2-3x

RAM is x3 (only x2 is usable) and basically that is the only thing they said (because all the rest is roughly the same). This will be clear when the console releases, but you can already extrapolate from the power consumption and from the fact that they were "totally" unable to "show" anything on screen that looked better of something that we already saw on older machines. Let alone the were unable to match the top graphic on those machines.

This isn't common when a powerful machine come out (powerful 2x,3x like some of you say). Xbox 360 had game on launch like perfect dark, it had oblivion few month after launch and gears of war in the first year. PS3 had resistance. Those games clearly made the gap in tech apparent.

Surely, like always, there were sub par games at beginning of the cycle But there were also games that marked clearly the differences from previous generation. This is absent form wiiU scene, and that is because the wiiU is NOT a new generation form hardware perspective.

Bull.

RAM is 4x. Not even counting that there is probably a more advanced (faster) type of RAM. Next, the WiiU GPU whipes the floor with with PS360, it is not 'roughly' the same. They aren't 'unable' to show anything that looks better. People have forgotten E32011, the garden demo and Zelda demo showed definate leaps over the last Gen. And those were made on older devkits.

The only reason people think WiiU won't be more powerful is for now we've only seen direct ports from PS360 games. This is the same with the start of every generation, which has been said countless times now (with the exception of the 5th, when the jump to 3D was made). The fact that the developers of Black Ops 2 of all things apparently actually made some effort to give the game a much higher resolution just for the hell of it, should be enough evidence already.

You think the WiiU is sweating when running Batman Arkham City or Assassin's Creed 3?

It's definitely 4x more powerful than the outdated HDtwins.

Will the PS4/neXtBOX be even more powerful? Most likely, but those who think their launch games will instantly look like those fabled Pixar graphics, must really get a reality check.

Based on what we know now... about equal.

I think Nintendo's goal was make it cheap and make it easy to port PS360 games to it.

Guess you didn't get to see the Nintendo Wii U conference.  It has roughly 4x more RAM...you know memory needed to run games(it doesn't even mention the loads of embedded RAM it should have) and a more modern GPU than the ones found on last gen HD systems.  So being equal shouldn't even be an option since there is loads of information/facts showing that it is a true, blue next gen system.  Now the real question is how much more?!!!

But its still running games at 720p. I would hope a console just twice as powerful could do a full 1080p. To put that in perspective... its the same reolution the 360 has done for about 7 years.

All we know is it has more RAM. But others specs could be inferior or just equal. We'll have to wait and see.

Maybe 20% more efficient, and graphically indistinguishable from the other consoles.

Well apparently it's got a 6760 in it and a solid CPU and ram, so quite a bit better. It will have a better chance at having next gen ports of PS4/720 games than the Wii did.

I think a raw number may not do justice to what the Wii U represents ...

One of the more important concepts in modern game engine design is scalability because publishers want to be able to release a game across as many platforms as possible and developers don't want to create an entire set of models and textures for each platform they release a game on.

(Probably) the most important technology related to this is tessellation which will allow a game engine to render an object at lower detail when it is on lesser hardware or the detail wouldn't be noticed, and then to increase the detail on better hardware when the increased detail will be noticed.

While the XBox 360 and PS3 can not receive the full benefits of this, game developers will (potentially) start producing games where the base level of detail is somewhere between what you'd expect from an XBox and an XBox 360 game, and then (through tessellation and displacement maps) the detail level can be increased far beyond what we've seen on the HD consoles.

The net effect of this is that, even with rendering the same number of polygons, the Wii U version may appear to have more detail than what we've seen on the HD consoles so far.

With that said, I suspect the Wii U is probably 3 to 4 times as powerful as the HD consoles; and when you see cross plaform games produced with game engines that are designed to scale being released on both the HD consoles and the Wii U there will be a significant improvement in the visuals of the Wii U version.

Just like the XBox 360 was

I guess some people just simply want to to ignore facts. Just because the CPU is different.

Just like the XBox 360 was

Don't make me post the same damn Kameo pitures again.

OT, noticeably more powerful. Down the road we will see games looking appreciably better than PS360 ones.
