Forums - Sony Discussion - What will it take to Re-invigorate Vita in America?

They need a strong holiday performance from AC, COD and LBP. Then they need a price cut early next year. Or even this year if possible. Then they need to make sure GT shows up on the platform sooner rather than later. And Ready at dawn better be working on a post ascension Vita GoW.

Revolutionary games.

Ps2 games off psn

Or

AC: Liberation and exclusives like it

They need at least 2 huge system selling, exclusive games. Currently, all the games they've released have been good but not in the way Mario, Halo or Gran Turismo can move hardware. On top of this their is no guarantee that established franchises will push hand-held hardware. We'll see how CoD pushes the Vita come Christmas.

Secondly, they need new SKUs. All of them should have at least some internal storage as well as room to expand via memory cards. The decision to go with proprietary memory cards and over-charging has probably done more damage to the Vita brand then good so they should at least drop the costs of the memory cards.

Finally, they need to drop the price. General consumers can now play quality games on mobiles and tablets. The value of a hand-held device that primarily plays games has diminished in the eyes of many consumers.

It should probably be noted that Gran Turismo on a handheld (PSP in 2009) did reasonably (2.89m to date), but only managed to sell around 1.2m on around 50m PSP units in that year (according to the database here). So while I'm not saying that it wouldn't move some Vita units, a Gran Turismo game would have to some kind of special to be able to push Vitas. The PSP was pretty successful in the number of units it moved, but something might be needed that's even more impressive than GT to really get the Vitas moving.

Need a price cut now followed by a strong string of big IP games. Xmas is sorted for that with LBP, COD, AC, FIFA, PErsona, All Stars and stuff, but it needs to continue on to next year. Get that FF type 0 game localise soon, Killzone needs to be there early.. etc.

I don't think Sony are willing to cut the price though, which is really really going to hurt the thing. Hopefully they're in this for the long haul....

Nothing. It looks like Sony has realized this too, so they aren't even really bothering anymore.

I don't know about America, but in the UK I have noticed lots and LOTS of PS Vita ads in the past few days. They are really good ads too, showing off gameplay etc. But yeah, as soon as GTA, COD, GOW etc. come out sales should pick up a bit in the US...but I seriously don't think the Vita is even gonna pass 20m lifetime at this stage

Yeah, SONY are really pushing advertising in the UK.

They won't price cut because they need to try the next step first. Bundles with games at the same price as now to see if the Vita will start flying off the shelves that way. If so, they'll probably keep working that angle. If not, they move to whatever Plan C is in their play book.

Hirai's interviews early on said that they were hoping for profitability in three years though, so I definitely think they're looking long haul.
