Well, XIII-2 might be a cash grab but the game did manage to address a lot of the problems I had with XIII. It's certainly not as linear and allows for a lot of player freedom in how the game is experienced. The combat system is just as good as XIII, and the addition of monsters fighting as part of the party adds for a lot of variety in party dynamics which is really nice. The story is still pretty out there though and the writing is not bad but it's not good either, so-so.

I think this sums up my feelings pretty well: http://www.gamrreview.com/review/88791/final-fantasy-xiii-2/

I have just platinumed the game so everything is still fresh in my mind!

Story – The story in FFXIII was really confusing but you could tell they did try to create an
interesting world and engaging events. The same can be said for FFXIII-2 but you can bold
confusing in this one. What’s a Yeul anyway? The most interesting stories were the ones
associated with the Paradox Endings. Those are nice and you only get to see them once you’ve
completed the main story.

Characters – Noel and Serah are actually great characters when compared to most characters
from JRPG games. Perhaps too normal. I think that’s why they figured they should throw Mog in
the mix. It wouldn’t be Final Fantasy without some cheesiness!

Gameplay – I don’t see FFXIII-2’s gameplay as an improvement over FFXIII’s. I’m not a fan of the
constant same 2 party members and the alternate monster partner. I had only two different
monsters throughout the whole game because the game never compelled me to bother
gathering monster materials to level one up. I feel like it’s wasted potential because there are so
many monsters to tame and they all have a special attack (that was really underpowered by the
way) that I would have loved to see. I thought the gameplay really shined in the Lightning DLC
though where it’s a 1vs1 fight and where changing paradigms matters.

Music – Good enough!

Graphics – About the same as FFXIII and sometimes very impressive.

Content – The main story is shorter than FFXIII’s but the post-play content is much more
extensive. Platinuming the game was probably more fun than going through the main story.
Chocobo Racing could have been more fun and the slot machines were stolen from hell I’m sure.

Overall – There are no other JRPG series out there with so much production value and despite all its flaws, I still loved it and I can't wait for Lightning Returns!

7/10 Will write more later.

No male lead. Noel has a vagina and Sarah is too girly. It has better combat while being dragged down by a weak story and horrible characters. IT is an easy button masher that requires little skill, but a lot of boring time to grind up you characters level.

anyone know why Pezus was banned?

Struggling to think of a score for it compared to XIII's 9.5.

It took a few steps forward but took too many steps back. The story and narration was a mess, environments were confined and the battle system was broken with only two full party members and was far too easy.

Overall, I would give it an 8.8.

As opposed to FFXIII's story that had to be read via an in-game encyclopedia?

As opposed to the narrow hallways?

Not sure why you list these two, as the same issues were in XIII, not to mention the environments were much better in XIII-2, and the story, while not as GOOD as XIII's, it was told much better without as much need for the datalogs.
