Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will the 3DS die in the West the same way the PSP did?

I don't think it'll struggle, but it's yet to be seen whether or not it'll hit DS numbers. Which I doubt.

But we still have all those games in your OP, and then the promise of big-budget 3rd party games; something the DS had a shortage of. And it's sold 20million Worldwide already, so I'm not sure of where there's even any hint that this will be another PSP scenario, which failed because it tried to do everything, but then smartphones came along and did everything a bit better. Bar the games, of course.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I'd say it'll do 75m minimum and 120m maximum - so it won't re-do what the PSP did, nor will it re-do what DS did either...

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I have been following the handheld wars on VGChartz ever since 2007, and you cannot compare sales in 2012 to sales back in those days. The market has simply changed. There will always be room for dedicated handhelds, but now that phones are powerful enough to be every device you used to carry all in one device, people will just use that since it is so convenient. Now clearly this isn't the only reason, but this is one of the major reasons, in my opinion.

So I do not believe that the 3DS will do as great as the DS, and I think it would be considered a success if it did as well as the PSP, enough though considering the Vita might even curl up and die. Nintendo isn't going to have competition in relation to dedicated gaming devices, so they should have at least some security in that.

You know the last starting time in Sid Mier's Pirate's? The Sunset of Pirates? Well this time is kind of like the sunset of Gaming Dedicated Handhelds.

None of this is Nintendo's fault, I think they came at this the right way after the dropped the price. It's just that the digital age is here... For better or worse.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Another Westerner who just does not care. If you gave me a hundred Wonderful Mario games I would still not care. People want variety even though Mario is fun. We are getting like 2 games in the West over the rest of the year for the 3DS that are big. Pokemon B&W 2 is coming for the DS.

I'd say that Skylanders: Giants, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, and Scribblenauts Unlimited are fairly big. Not Layton or Paper Mario big, but still not to be glanced over, even if two of them are actually multiplatform titles.

why are you complaining about games for a system you don't even have?

there are plenty of games out for it!

The difference between Sony and Nintendo is Nintendo actually makes games for their handheld, so no. As long as Mario/Pokemon/etc. keep coming out the DS/3DS will still have a presence at least in the West, the Vita is the one that's going to be wiped out entirely unless Sony shifts strategy big time.

What? Of course I have a 3DS. I have added many Vgcharters. Do not tell me that you think the West has anywhere near enough games like Japan has. Do not look to the Wii as an example of how often games should be released for a system. That is wrong as well. We should get at least two decent games a month.

you say you have added many VGchartes? you mean games added here on the site? I did check but I did not see 3DS listed so I thought you didn't have it yet

That article is so trollish that I literally have nothing to say but this useless and unproductive sentence.

I do think 3DS will have to deal with a dearth of western games. It's a very viable platform in Japan, and looks like it will have 90% of the Japanese developer's support since Vita is looking pretty D.O.A. but western developers are developing for iOS/Android instead.

However, when I think about great DS titles, they were all Japanese anyways. The RPGs, Pokemon, Nintendo titles. Yes GTA: Chinatown Wars was there but it wasn't a big system seller. I don't think any western made game was (that I can think of). So, 3DS should be fine without them even if it doesn't hit DS's sales.

Look at it. We have Mario. That is it, and we are hoping for a few more games that are worth buying in the West before years end. This thing at this point is about on par with the DS and we have no games coming? I walk by the 3DS stand a dozen times a night at Walmart while working and I always hope to see something new, something different. Recently I have seen more Wii games that are new than 3DS games. The XL and Mario effect are already starting to subside as the system is leveling out again. The 360 even managed to pop ahead of it again this week without any big game releases at all. Japanese games are what is selling on the system. Monster Hunter is on its way again and the West really does not care too much.

So what is useless about the article again? When everything is pretty much right. :)

It failed to take into consideration the way Nintendo brand works and how well they can time/market their products compared to SONY, one of SONY's big problems is that they have been really really bad at marketing their products on top of ridiculous requirements and prices. Also still backwards compatible with DS games so it becomes the question of how much money people want to shell out for the 3DS vs the DS. Once the DS gets phased out completely, the sales will also change.
