Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bayonetta 2: Developers Explain Why They Sided With Nintendo

SegmentNext

A lot of joyful and saddened reactions were seen when Nintendo announced Bayonetta 2 to be heading to the Wii U as an exclusive title.

The saddened reactions off course coming from the ones who are content with their current console and want to play the sequel to the original Bayonetta without buying Nintendo’s console.

Platinum Games is behind both games and today their studio’s head, Tatsuya Minami released statements to explain why what happened happened.

As game developers, we are incredibly excited to be able to announce a new title to all of our fans; however, we are aware that the announcement may have come as a shock to many of you.

As with Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 is under development and production here at Platinum Games, and is a true sequel to the acclaimed first game in the series. Bayonetta is one of our most beloved titles, and it played a large part in establishing Platinum Games as an emerging game studio in the minds of users worldwide. Bayonetta has fans the world over, and we would never dream of alienating them from participating in the future of Platinum Games.

That being said, the console games market is in a state of upheaval, so establishing a new game franchise requires a considerable amount of will, determination, and love. Bayonetta is a brand that we want to see become stronger, reaching the hands of more and more gamers, so we have continued to consult with Sega, the previous game’s publisher, on how we can make sure this takes place. Our answer was a new partnership with Nintendo.

Along with their new hardware, Nintendo, as a company, is dedicated to establishing a new future for the games industry, as you can tell by their record of passionate support for gaming. Alongside Nintendo, we hope to grow the Bayonetta brand beyond where it stands today, allowing even more gamers around the world to experience the action of our beloved witch. As developers, we are working hard to make this a reality.

Yusuke Hashimoto, the director and creature designer of the game had this to say:

It has been three years since Bayonetta, a title I was also a part of… I’m incredibly happy to be able to announce that we are working on a sequel. Alongside Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya, I’m working on everything from creating a compelling world to character designs (I will be designing the enemies again), and everyone on our talented team is united around the core of Bayonetta, Climax Action, in an effort push the series forward. For empowering our heroine with incredible new action to introducing new characters (which you may have noticed in the teaser trailer), Bayonetta will further expand on the mythology of the Trinity of Realities—Inferno, Paradiso, and our human world. I can’t wait to take the journey with you.

One would say this to be a feather in Nintendo’s cap but interestingly speculations on the web are suggesting the game to be timed exclusive for the Wii U.

O_o So they put it exclusively on a console with currently 0 install base and unlikely to get a substantial install base for a game like this any time soon.

Fine to move from being multiplat to exclusive and ditching the previous consoles. But don't talk bullshit while you're announcing it. Just come out and say that Nintendo were keen to help publish the game, you were happy to take up their offer, and Sega gave it the nod. Don't pretend that the game is going to reach more people on a new console than the original game did on 2 consoles with substantial install bases. People don't like it when you think they are fools and can get away with saying anything.

Do what you want, but be honest about it.

This looks like a new- more advanced breed of bullshit.

The whole thing is pretty sad, actually.

New/niche games have a better chance of selling well on a new console. Customers are more open-minded at that time than they are mid to late gen.

If it was on PS360, it would probably have sold worse than the first considering how saturated the sales of those consoles are thanks to a gen that has been going on to long.

Maybe with the attention it will get by being exclusive on a system with a still-small library and Nintendo marketing it on TV plus MiiVerse, it'll sell really well.

Even if this was true, putting the title on all three consoles would still result in the most sales.

Actual than most Nintendo fans wouldn't buy the game.

Nintendo fans from the wii days didn't buy games that were third party multi-system (besides COD) but they tend to buy Wii-only games more.

Nintendo fans usually like to buy games that other systems don't have so they can brag.

It will probbaly do better on Wii-U because it will be treated like Nintendo IP (nintendo is publishing) and will be marketed as Wii-U Hardcore Title for Image reasons.

Xbox360/Ps3 would just release it as some other tittle. Look at what Nintendo do at there confernece they made trailer to make it look like hey this game matters Sony/Mirco would never do this.
