Forums - Nintendo Discussion - WiiU has only 1GB for running the game

1 GB OS RAM is more than enough to get OS level Voicechat while playing, right?

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

That has been a good strategy for Nintendo the last generation, so why change that now?
Nintendo gamers don't want to have the best graphics.

because the wii is barely alive.. on both the software front and hardware sales front in comparison to when Nintendo's strategy worked last gen..

It still worked out quite well for Nintendo though. Even though sales have dwindled, it was still Nintendo's best selling home console and probably the most profitable as well.

I'd argue its still a good strategy especially considering current HD platforms still look great. But that tablet controller might make the Wii U too expensive.

Trolls are trolling... 2Gb its FOUR times what PS3/X360 have.

Wii U uses 1Gb for OS and 1Gb for games, with the possibility to "open" part of the OS assigned memory for use with games (as what has happened to 3DS).

PS3/360 have a total of 512Mb (That's half Gb) and use 256Mb for OS and 256 for games. So, Wii U still quadruplicates PS3/360 in RAM.

Even if PS360 used all their 512Mb in games, Wii U with its 1Gb for games would still DOUBLE PS360.

And consoles spec's doasn't have much to with PC specs; PCs have ALWAYS had three or four times more RAM than consoles since PC run more processes than consoles (from gaming to video editing, i.e.).

Sonysoft are doomed...

Ahem, a few fixes I feel like I need to make. First, PS3 has 256 MB of RAM and 256 MB of VRAM and they're not the same thing. Second, 360 has 512 MB of memory shared between the system and the GPU so it's not all RAM either (in any games at least). Also, your claim of PS360 using 256 of RAM for the OS is just ridiculous. It's simply not possible for the PS3 because it has 256 MB of RAM total. Last I heard anything about PS3 OS's memory usage, it was 60-90 MB I think - and it could have been much lower. Don't know about the 360 though but I doubt it's 256 MB because games would have hardly anything to work with.

And now I'm not entirely sure but I wouldn't say PCs have more RAM because of running more processes. Those processes aren't even running most of the time so why would the use RAM then? Games alone use much more RAM on PC than they do on consoles. If I had to guess, I'd say some of it goes to better graphics and stuff (if you can keep more stuff in memory, why not?), some of it goes to running the games better (PC games typically go above 30 frames per second, and yes, I know RAM isn't exactly the primary concern here but it's a factor nonetheless), and some of it goes to 'heavier' architecture (ie. games get more direct access to hardware on consoles).

Yep 1GB of RAM for the OS seems insane. Maybe with some future firmware upgrades they will "unlock" some of this ram to run games.

Way more than enough. X360 last I checked had around 30-32MB of ram dedicated to the OS and it has CrossGameChat. I can't remember how many people it allows.

From what we've heard but I can't find confirmation of, ~320MB (10x PSP's total ram) of Vita's 512MB of ram is used for games, leaving 190MB to the OS. It supports up to 8 players in it's CrossGameChat rooms.

4 ≈ One

lol I was expecting 1.5 but 2gb ram, that's great!

lol at the doomed video
