Anime is a cartoon in japan, it means animation. Anything can be an "anime" as long as it's animated.

I think what the thread is asking for is favorite japanese anime though. Not sure on the intent of the thread. But generally someone would ask what the favorite cartoon or animation is if they were asking for american anime. But wth do I know. Just my 2 cents.

Favorite anime show would be Code Geass, I couldn't get enough of that show when I first watched. And favorite movie would have to be Spirted Away, it's just magicial to me for some reason. Maybe because I watched it as a child, but it's still my favorite anime movie.

Planetes, Ghost in the Shell, and Haibane Renmei are my favorite Show. It's hard to pick because they all have their own thing that charms me a whole lot.
