Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can Nintendo hold the Wii By them selves?

So you really mean 360 and PS3 combined will sell most of what was sold last generation? In that case we are looking at 70 million for each? And more for the wii?

I assume you came to that 70 million based on 140 million combined last generation?

I think the combined sales this generation for the PS3+360 could reach that mark, although I don't think it will be 50/50. One will outsell the other by a lot.

And I think the Wii's sales will be whatever the Wii's sales are, independent of the PS3 or 360.

We should do a pole that reads "How many people wanted a 360 or PS3, but got a Wii and now have no desire to own any other console?"

I but the answer is somewhere close to zero.

They can but they absolutely must not be allowed. If Nintendo dominates their console, 3rd parties will have to go the Xbox360/PS3/PC trifecta. Therefore, the only companies that'll thrive will be the ones that can make a Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy or a Halo. All the others will build another generic FPS or go downhill.

So far, third parties have been using slings to fight with tanks (Nintendo games); they needs to bring their big guns onto the Wii to fight against Nintendo, they can't back off.

Once a developer actually takes the "risk" of releasing one of their known AAA titles, and it sells extremely well, it will cause the Wii to get many more titles and be the dominant console software as well as hardware wise.

The DS is a perfect example, little support at the beginning, and then gradually as the developers realize they can sell on it, they jump on board. 2009 will be the year they will finally come fully on board.

Their last two consoles sold far less than the Wii eventually will and were still financially successful while have predominantly only Nintendo games.

Personally I hope this doesn't happen as I would like a larger 3rd party support than previous machines had.

No, without the help of 3rd parties, Nintendo could not keep the Wii as the fastest selling system. However, since the Wii has more 3rd party support than any console, the Wii should do fine. I am not yet sure if the Wii has more 3rd party support than the PS3 and 360 combined, but it looks like that will happen.
I think the general concensus is that wii does not have much 3rd party support, or else there would not be a need for this thread. Where did you get this information?

It is a combination of fact and opinion-

Fact- The Wii has or will soon have the most 3rd party games

Opinion- More 3rd party games appeal to me than 360 and PS3 3rd party games combined

Opinion- The Wii may end up with more total 3rd party games than the 360 and PS3 combined.

I think the general concensus is that some people are concerned with the type of 3rd party support the Wii is getting, not that the Wii does not have much 3rd party support.  Everyone knows more 3rd party games are coming to the Wii.

One reason the PS1 and PS2 took of is because that's where 3rd parties really let their creative juices flow. Sony sorta let the guys have free reign on those consoles. Lot's of new IP's came out as a result. I doubt developers are going to take those kinds of chances with development costs being so high on the PS360 side of things. Nintendo could succeed without ANY third parties. I don't think any Nintendo fan wants to see them try.

We'll never know because the Wii has a ton of third party support right now, with a lot of good 3rd party games due out in 2008 also.

Nintendo did the N64 almost alone. That's when they lost their third party support. Considering that Nintendo has, inarguably, the two most attractive platforms for third parties to develop on, we'll see a ton of third party support on the Wii.

In the past, Nintendo has been known to require work on one console to get access to their handhelds. They did it with Square/Enix before on the Gamecube.

Marketing is what sells the console to consumers. Nintendo could quite literally sell this console with absolutely no games of quality. They could sell it with a library ten times smaller then what they currently have, and they could mandate that all games have a mandatory rating of E for everybody. While its true we see some brand loyalty in the sales most of it boils down to the image that Nintendo is conveying to consumers.

The console isn't selling on its strength of library yet. I think eventually it will assuming that advertising results in a diminishing return over time. What I mean to say that the non gamers, or the family gamers, or the returning gamers get tired of the entire concept. I think the user base really is built out of trend enthusiasts rather then console enthusiasts, and they do not seem to be all that exceptionally loyal.

I would say this Nintendo couldn't really hold up their last two consoles on their own. Without third party support gamer interest did wane in them. Nintendo isn't being judged on that at the moment. Yet eventually you are going to hear last generations comments resurface. I actually think that the library is going to get worse over time rather then better on the Wii. So yes they will need third party support, and more specifically a lot of it. Once they have to start selling to core and hardcore gamers rather then the general public.

Either way given the Nintendo if you are a hardcore or core gamer. You really should be concerned with the Wii library or more specifically the lack of enough decent and varied titles.

Think about this.

Imagine it happened.  Imagine that Nintendo did have to almost single-handedly support the Wii with its games.  This would cement the image that "Only Nintendo games sell on Nintendo consoles."  Do you understand how painful that stigma would be not only this generation but in the following ones?  Even with the highest selling console of the bunch, 3rd parties choosing not to support a Nintendo console means that they wouldn't even support it at its best.

This is all hypothetical, but this stigma is a very real possibility that Nintendo very much needs to avoid.

But... the support is going to eventually follow much like it did with the DS. The struggle is centered around Japan where home console gaming has been contracting and the third party developers there are struggling in the home market. I'm sure the western developers are going to figure out how to put one and one together and come out with "ii" soon.

For one thing, yes they could, as has beens stated already.

For another thing: In that recent list of Wii release dates, out of 80 games, 4 were by Nintendo. Granted, a lot of the T-P was cashin crap, but in no way will they have to hold the system up by themselves.
