Forums - Sales Discussion - the wii and third parties

third parties are not "not selling" they are not selling as well as the first parties.

the blame doesnt go to nintendo, or the wii purchasers, 3rd parties should blame them self for making crappy games.

i think in my own judgment and my own personal openion, that the wii has gr8 games and its just a matter of time till the "Hard Core" players get forced to get a wii.

besides.. why would some one like me need a 360 or a ps3 ? sure they have got gr8 games, but this is why i got my pc for.

I agree third-parties are somewhat to blame, but their games selling badly isn't going to encourage them to ramp up production as quickly as it would otherwise.

Unfortunately, Nintendo can release a bad game and sell in the millions or multi-millions [see Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree and Mario Party 8].

It really wouldn't care about games like Mario Party 8 selling well if they sold for some other reason than the fact that Mario is in the title. If it would have been "Super Party 8" or something, it would have been lucky to break a million.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I completely agree. I'm so sick of hearing this lame 3rd party developers complain about the Big-N kicking their butts. But, mayyyyybe if they had a unique, creative thought, and put some serious time and effort into their titles... like Nintendo does.. then maybe they'd do a lot better and make the consumers happy. Don't complain about the competition doing well because of their high production values and beloved IP.... Do better and actually try to compete.

Mario Party 8 is selling well because it's a genuinely good collection of party mini games. Have you tried playing it with a group of friends?

I would say the name of Mario is less and less a strength for Nintendo this gen, due to the influx of new gamers who aren't entirely familiar with the mascot.

Nintendo games sell because they're actually advertised. I haven't seen a single third-party Wii game advertised since Red Steel.

Well... It sure isn't the lack of quality that made No more heroes Bomb!... I want that game bad myself!...

But the truth is that it is a little concerning. Although a lot of third party games are not good, it seems like the few that are (very few), are not slling that great and just managing to break even. I love the Wii, i have fun with it, but i have played more gamecube and VC games than i have actual Wii Games. I think Zak and Wiki is coming out here tomorrow (UK), i will definately be picking it up, and also no more heroes at the end of feb.

I would not blame nintendo for this. A lot of these publishers need to advertise thier games more. I think No more heroes will do great out here, simply because Ubisoft is publishing it, so they will probably advertising it out here. I also saw a few Zak and Wiki comercials on TV this week, so it might do great out here.

If third party games were "bombing" like some people claim there should be games which fit the 3 of the following 4 conditions and sold poorly; If third party games were underperforming there should be a long list of games that fit 2 of the following 4 conditions and sold poorly.

  • Popular IP
  • Popular Genre
  • Heavily Marketed
  • High Quality

The reality is that few third party games that have been released for the Wii satisfy any of those conditions, and those that statisfy one or more of these conditions tend to sell at an appropriate level.
