Forums - Sales Discussion - NSMB2 vs the Vita Top 10

A little while back, Rol made an... interesting thread predicting that New Super Mario Bros 2 would sell more than the Top Ten Vita Games of E3 2012 combined. Although no Top 10 list ever materialized, it got me thinking: How much will NSMB2 sell in comparison to the 2012 Vita library all by itself?

For the purposes of this scenario, I'm going to compare NSMB2's 2012 sales against the top 10 best selling Vita games of 2012 that were first released in 2012. This means none of the Japanese launch titles (Uncharted, Hot Shots Golf, Ridge Racer, etc) can be included. That would be breaking the "Top 10 of 2012" rule.

Tracking begins for the week ending August 11.

August 11 - NSMB2 is at 0.78 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.64 million. Difference of 0.86 million.

August 18 - NSMB2 is at 1.10 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.67 million. Difference of 0.57 million.

August 25 - NSMB2 is at 1.51 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.70 million. Difference of 0.19 million.

September 1 - NSMB2 is at 1.84 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.83 million. Difference of 0.01 million.

September 8 - NSMB2 is at 2.05 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.86 million. Difference of 0.19 million.

September 15 - NSMB2 is at 2.23 million! Vita Top 10 is at 1.89 million. Difference of 0.34 million.

September 22 - N/A

September 29 - NSMB2 is at 2.49 million. Vita Top 10 is at 1.96 million. Difference of 0.53 million.

October 6 - NSMB2 is at 2.59 million. Vita Top 10 is at 2.00. Difference of of 0.59 million.

October 13 - NSMB2 is at 2.69 million. Vita Top 10 is at 2.05. Difference of 0.64 million.

November 10 - NSMB2 is at 3.12 million. Vita Top 10 is at 2.19 million. Difference of 0.93 million.

November 10 (Update) - Due to populaar demand, I'm including the boxed sales of Little Deviants. The VIta Top 10 is thus at 2.23 million, with a difference of 0.89 million.

November 17 - NSMB2 is at 3.28 million. Vita Top 10 is at 2.30 million. Difference of 0.98 million.

December 1 - NSMB2 is at 3.72 million. Vita Top 10 is at 2.81 million. Difference of 0.91 million.

December 8 - NSMB2 is at 4.02 million. Vita Top 10 is at 3.03 million. Difference of 0.99 million.

December 15 - NSMB2 is at 4.40 million. Vita Top 10 is at 3.30 million. Difference of 1.10 million.

The Top 10 Vita Games of 2012 are (millions):

Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation (0.58) + FIFA Soccer (0.43) + Persona 4 Golden (0.41) + Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified (0.35) + LittleBigPlanet (0.32) + Rayman Origins (0.28)   + Gravity Rush (0.28) +  Unit 13 (0.22) + Little Deviants (0.22) + Madden NFL 13 (0.21) = 3.30

Which future Vita releases will replace spots in the Top 10? Will New Super Mario Bros be a match for 10 games all by itself? And even if the Vita wins, is it a true victory? Find the answers to all these questions and more in this new weekly feature!

I have to say, I'm astonished that Nintendo is totally dominating the handheld market even with the 3DS being very anti-climatic compared to it's revolutionary predecessor DS.

Things couldn't have worked out better for Nintendo. They took a risk on alienating the DS crowd and very luckily got away with still being able to be #1.

...Wonder if it will work out that way for WiiU since it is a similar situation

its going to destroy not just the top 10, but the whole library .....

It looks like more NSMB is selling less than expected than Vita games selling more than expected. No 2012 game selling 300k by now is ridiculous.

I think Rol predicted that NSMB2 would defeat the entire Vita library or every Vita game announced at E3 or something. I really gotta stop betting against that guy.

*edit* Either I'm reading so fast that my brain isn't letting the info soak in or you went back and added Rol to the OP.  I feel a little foolish pointing out something that's already thered.

There is Uncharted, which by itself is over 0.6 million, but it was released in 2011 fo Japan. Other than that, the Vita sales are pretty dismal. Admittedly, VGChartz doesn't count digital sales. But the same can be said about Mario, so fair's fair.

If I wanted to be cruel, I'd make this a top 10 vs 10 and throw in games like Dragon Quest, Kid Icarus, Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil, and Mario & Sonic, each of which has sold over half a million.

I don't really like to use VG Chartz software numbers, but if we compare japanese sales only (famitsu/garaph)

Mario is 940k

Vita top 10 japan:

1 - Persona is 193k
2 - Hot shots is 93k
3 - Uncharted is 58k
4 - Tales of Innocence is 57k
5 - Gravity Daze is 56k
6 - Dinasty Warriors NEXT is 45k
7 - Ragnarok Oddysey is 44k
8 - Ciel No Surge is 34k
9 - Metal Gear Collection is 31k
10 - Lord Of Apocalypse is 29k

Total: 640k

Not even with Hatsune Miku Vita numbers will aproach Mario's there. Even Dragon Quest Monsters beat it this year. In fact, both of them are above the known software number for Vita which is 814,518 (Top 26: http://garaph.info/softwaregroup.php?grid=S1151 ). With Digital though, Vita numbers improve since Mario's digital sales are not that great.

If you count this year alone (without hotshot golf, uncharted, dynasty warriors and lord of apocalypse, it's even less - games with 18k would enter the list)

I think that once you had the remaining figures for NSMB2, Rol will be correct and i doubt things will change.

Dudebro, you do realize what site we're on? And the point is really worldwide performance.

And I'm sure how you can count some launch titles for Vita and leave out others.

That said, some of those titles should have some decent sales boosts when they launch in the West.

The bet was that NSMB2 would outsell the top 10 Vita games announced/shown at E3 2012. I think it will.
