Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the Vita truely dead?

If it doesn't sell well during the holidays even with those big named games, then yes it's dead for sure. Nintendo will probably own this holiday with the WiiU being released and 3DS XL and NSMB2 being the big hitters. It's gonna be Nintendo, Apple, and Samsung this holiday season.

While I doubt PASBR can be a hit there - it has a release date there already too - the other two can become hits for sure

I'm not sure about PSASBR either way. On one hand, I think the game looks like a parody of Smash Bros. On the other hand, if it turned out to be as great as Smash Bros is perceived to be (I'm not crazy about the game), I think Japan would eat it up. Brawl is the 9th best selling Wii game in Japan, and the biggest not to have "Wii in the title". The N64 iteration was the 2nd best selling game on the system, behind only Mario Kart. Even Melee, the worst-selling of the series over there, was the best selling GameCube title period.

My point is, mascot fighters seem to be big in Japan. So PSASBR stands a chance of doing pretty well.

@Chark Off topic but what year do you think the Vita will sell 8 to 10 million. That prediction kinda makes you look un reliable.

That prediction was made during its launch. Should I change it to look more correct? Wouldn't that defeat the point? The year isn't over yet and I didn't predict it to be any lower. As of now it is looking to sell below that. Regardless of reaching that number or not, that number is not a marker of whether the product is generating Sony any money. With their recent reduction in anticipated shipments it is safe to say the Vita might not reach overall profitablity in the 3 years they originally predicted, though 2 and 1/2 years is a long time to overcome consumer apprehension and beat expectations.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Well, who knows. Maybe it's a surprise hit. We'll see on November 8 - funny it'll reach japan before the other regions.

Can't really comment until after its first holiday season and compare the annual totals with SCE's projected sales.

Currently, it does look like a ship sailing with neither direction nor destination.

I don't agree that SCE should just forfeit and kill production though, unless their intention is to leave mobile gaming altogether. With PSV compatibility being introduced to mobile phones and tablets, it could still remain a viable option for those who want a reasonably priced piece of multi-function hardware geared towards gaming, without any contracts or subscription plans.

The market is just smaller for dedicated portable gaming devices overall.

Plus, the PSV is only going to be cheaper to manufacture the longer it's in production. Already less than $160.

I'll enter wait mode now.
Will only comment Vita's sales in the Japanese sales thread or when Sony releases their financials for Q2 (still ways to go from October) - no more threads like this one for me.

Amen, and with all that information I have the Vita's status in terminal condition if not dead already.  It launched 9 months ago in Japan and has not even touched 2.5 mil units.  It may or may not be selling for a loss, but doing business with it will either yield little to no chance of return; unless Sony is willing to fund projects.  With the advent of next generation systems like Wii U, 720, and PS4 support could only go down from here unless they have a healthy userbase.  Apple and smart devices have limited and will continue to limit the Vita's (and to an extent 3DS) growth and potential.

@Chark I agree no reason to change it, and overall I think it will be profitable, I think Sony would whether it sell poorly and make them some money. I honestly don't see the vita ever taking off but we'll see.

The first Super Smash Bros. mainly included characters from the Super Mario, Zelda and Pokémon. All of these series broke the million mark in Japan alone at one point or another (individual games, not a whole series combined). Essentially, Super Smash Bros. was a game full of popular mascots. PSABR is not. While the included characters may be more or less well-known in the West, they are obscure and niche in Japan.

Looks at Japanese MvC3 sales.

Good point.

No. In fact, I believe western holiday line-up looks better than 3DS with only Paper Mario, althought it has NSMB2 and XL.

Thought, it won't make big numbers, maybe not even respectable ones. Let's wait for next year.
