Forums - PC Discussion - Ubisoft: PC piracy rate around 95%, F2P is the way forward

So they are admitting that their always on DRM didn't work now? They claimed that it significantly reduced piracy. At least one of those statements is a lie, probably both. There is no real way of tracking piracy so he is clearly pulling the number out of his arse.

And if the number of people paying for F2P content and paying for full price games is the same, then what is the problem? lol

Meanwhile at Square Enix

“Very early on in development, we wanted to create a PC-specific version. We always had that planned. When the game changed hands from Activision to Square Enix, Square was incredibly supportive of the PC version and actually wanted us to do more with it,” O’Connell said. “It was at that point that we began to focus more resources on the PC version and it became what it is.”

“In some areas of the world, the PC version outsells the console version. If I’m not mistaken, Germany is an incredibly PC-centric market. [Publishers] make the decision on whether to do the PC version or not somewhat dependent on what they have in their sales forecasts for those particular areas,”

Millions? The only games that get pirated in the millions are games that sell in the millions.

You do know that most sites don't show how many total downloads there have been? ThePirateBay: Sleeping Dogs (most popular file): 3000 seeding and 5000 leeching. And that is a new release. 400 are seeding the 360 version btw and 700 leeching.

For the 93-95% to be even remotely true, downloads would have to be 10m+ per game with less than 1m sold. That just doesn't happen. So, that stat is taken deep from within someone's private behind.

Black Ops had over 4 milllion copies pirated in PC tracked in one torrent site.

How many copies Black Ops sold in PC??? VGC show just 1.5 million copies sold for PC.

The 95% is reliable for any PC game.

Anyway torrent is just a small part of piracy.

VGChartz's ability to track PC sales (even ignoring digital) has proven very poor in the past. Crytek says that Crysis 1 sold 3.5m on PC, VGChartz has it at 0.68m. Metro 2033 sold over 1 million on PC, VGC 0.17. Diablo 3 8.8m, VGC 2.62. BioShock 1m+ (6 months after launch), VGC 0.31. The Sims 3 10m+, VGC 2.64. Really none of VGC's numbers line up with any official numbers for games.

Half-Life 2 sold 12 million on PC, are we really going to consider the possibility that 240m people pirated it?

Whether Guillemot is making up the numbers or not is besides the point..

F2P is indeed the more lucrative model!! Iam an avid F2P MMO gamer from S.E.Asia and I've seen many of my friends/guild mates/leaders paid 1000-2000 USD purchasing vanity or pay2win items..

If the current majority of PC games switches from P2P to F2P, I believe that will be the end of the console/handheld gaming market.(that is of course unless they adapt too)

VGC PC numbers are useless. I don't see why they bother with them.

Alot of people are gonna call this out as not true but its likely a figure very close to this.

Simply go to any torrent site and see how many millions of downloads games get.

Hey I fully support PC gaming and understand why people pirate but if I was a developer I wouldnt go near th PC market with a 10 foot pole. As much as PC gamers try to downplay it Piracy is rampant and a huge problem.

And I pretty much agree with him F2P is the future of PC gaming

This!

And @BenVTrigger about ourselves and piracy: 15 years ago I used to pirate games and buy legit music, but then I grew so fed-up of music industry (too many LPs and CDs with just two or three good songs and the rest just crap to fill them, and at ever growing prices, not to mention that in Italy, before iTunes and Amazon, they used to cost twice as much as in UK) and IP lobbies and so satisfied of the best games developers that I started doing the opposite, I never pirate games anymore and I pirate music. Movies, I watch them on TV, my dad used to subscribe to pay TV, but when he died we didn't renew the subscription anymore, what's broadcasted free to view is more than enough, even more now with digital terrestrial TV. I go to cinema every now and then with friends of gf, but never alone, and now I got a gf living 10,000km away, so even cinema with her just can't happen.

Free to Play is a good way to settle this argument. If 95% pirate a game on PC, than a Free to Play-version of a game that sells around 10 million should have 200 million accounts. Generally, if this number is true, there should be several big F2P-games that have at least 100 million users. If we don't see this numbers in some years, we know this piracy-rate was a lie. If we see it, this rate was spot on.

League of Legends is pretty much the most popular free 2 play game (excluding web/social games which are mostly played by people not interested in "full games") arround (at least in the west) with 40 million users. World of Tanks would be the seccond with almost 30 million.

But really if we look at Battlefeild Play for Free, which is the best example of a free 2 play version of a full price franchise (being basically a tweaked BF2) has 6 million users. BF2 sold 2.2m units after 1 year, it's probably quite a bit higher now.

But the problem is F2P games are almost all multiplayer only (so far), where as most piracy is of singleplayer content. I don't really see most of those converting to F2P games.
