Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are Gaming Journalists Racists? Babying Japanese Developers?

I stopped reading when he started trying to criticize a Mario games story. I don't think anyone in the history of anywhere has ever said Mario has a brilliant story.

Also, he means figuratively, not literally. If you're going to bitch about writing, at least get that right.

I don't think he's ralking about games like Mario platfomers personally, those kinda get a pass for having next to no story or a patronizingly simple story but they aren't really gibberish that gets lauded as being an amazing story. To me that sounds more like he's criticizing the stranger side of Japanese gaming like Suda51 games and Katamari Damacy.

Personally I can't agree, I've seen lots of great JRPGs get smashed on meta so I don't think there's any positive bias towards Japanese games in general gaming journalism.

I swear it's like a curse, none of them can get past 80 sheesh.

Well I find this guy's ideals strange and hard to see his points.

Bwahahaha. If anything game journalists are against Japanese games for being Japanese and not the other way around. This is the first I've heard anyone even give this a thought.

What's worse is that I don't see how anyone can praise Western games are superior storytellers as the story for all of your blockbusters (including the examples they give) have some awful stories.

Interesting article, but I full-heartedly disagree with it (to a certain degree). Games like Gears of War, which rely more heavily around story, will be judged more harshly with regards to its story-telling. On the other hand, games like Super Mario Brothers are all about platforming and the story really doesn't matter much at all to the experience.

However, that's just one solitary case. Do you guys agree with this author that Japanese developers tend to get off the hook more easily than Western developers?

Should Mario be more like this new XBL game, Dust: An Elysian Tail? (Imbedded below) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg81GcutanQ

A really bigoted dev that is trying to call other people racist for some perceived nonexistent benefit.

I doubt he has any understanding of cultural differences. The plots you see from Japan are derived from there own cultural perspective and popular entertainment which is quite different than it is in the U.S. If anything, people berate them more for those differences than applaud them. In general, you will find more jounalist against Japanese games than for.

As the guy said on the first page, no one was appluading Bayonetta for it story.

Second, wouldn't one actually have to make a game like Bayonetta before saying they would get discriminated against? To my knowledge, there is no precedent of this occuring. He has created a nonexistent antagonist.

The only racist here is him.

As far as the youtube video. Why should Mario become a side scrolling hack and slash game?

The video was more about presentation, scenario, character development, and story. It's clearly a much more in-depth game in those regards, and I was wondering if that's what people wanted Mario to turn into. It was just a question. :P
