Forums - General Discussion - ‘You’ve made your choice’: Man shares dad’s brutal letter disowning him for being gay

Wow this thread got huuuge.

Must say there are some really sickening opinions in this thread.

What that father has done is sickening. If he thinks he "failed" as a parent because his son is gay he's wrong, the moment he "failed" as a parent is when he disowned him over something the son has no control over.

These people should be forced to read what the top medical associations are saying about homosexuality through years of research & unbiased techniques of analysis. But I guess even that wouldn't change their opinion.

We had a interesting workshop on homophobia at the end of last year at med school. The message was that homophobia causes immeasurable damage to confused young teens & feelings of having no way out (and many other potential self-worth issues). This is why LGBT teen suicide rates are so much higher than staight teens. One suicides when one sees no way out...that should be proof enough it's not a "choice"....all these teens need is someone to put a hand on their shoulder and say, "It's okay, it'll get better, you're not a monster & you can have a happy life".

Anyway it's about time this homophobia nonsense ended. Thankfully we seem to be getting closer to acceptance in Western society...in one of our lectures on "surrogacy & alternative conception techniques" at the end the lecturers asked us if we'd find it okay to let two dads have a child. 95% of our year put their hand up. 10 years ago in the same lecture only 10% had put their hand up. They said with each new batch of students the % saying yes for gay parents adoption/surrogacy has gone up. Anecdotal evidence yes but acceptance is growing...

Anyway it seems the thread has turned into something else altogether now with Atheism n stuff lol.

That's a great post with some interesting stuff. I like that 95% of your year put their hands up. I hope that it's a similar stat outside of University circles.

Actually, a gay society wouldn't go extinct because believe it or not they have a brain and they're smart and they would use techniques such has in vitro fertilisation or via artificial insemination to make babies. And all of that can be done without a man ever touching a woman XD

This guys a Genius!!!!^^^^

lol well said. The likely hood of an ENTIRELY gay population seems slim yet one could only dream. I tend to not think of sexuality as a switch anyway. One is not simply gay or straight, rather there is an entire spectrum of sexuality that each person falls under.

Effim./Hetero_________________Homo

          I                                               I

Masc  ____________________________

Where masculinity is more so your demeanor as in you personality and hetero/Homo is the actual physical attraction. They seem to be broadly distinct to me. I mean we have people like "Prince" who are a flamboyant metrosexual to the core, but I believe to be totally hetero.  You have big hulking steroid infused, sports playing, typical male mentality like guy....but happens to be gay. Hence the break down of different sorts....

-Lipstick Lesbian(effim lesbian)

-Butch/or more crass term Bull Dike (Masc lesbian)

-Gym Queen/Bears (Masc Homo)

-"Fairy",Twink,etc(Effim Homo)

To be honest I truly believe it is more of the demeanor(effim or masc) that disturbs people far more than the actual sexuality because it is visible and doesn't conform to social norms.

It's not something I would choose personally. And there may be some studies that support it not being a choice, but it will never be a set in stone fact such as 2+2=4. I still think nurture plays a big part as well as nature.

While we're at it, The earth is the center of the universe, evolution is a myth, and the world is flat!

Your claims here aren't up for debate though. The earth has been seen from space so we know for a fact it's flat and not the centre of the universe...and evolution has been well documented. But although there may be many solid sounding theories that homosexuality is nature, not nurture, it's not something there's a way to prove.

Like I obviously don't think you can take a gay man and beat/electroshock the gay out of him or something stupid like that, but I do think as a child is developing that his lifestyle can contribute to his sexuality.

I feel bad for HappyD sometimes.

Why ?

Was this a question to me?

(Why does no one use the quote thingie anymore?!)

It should be fairly obvious NPie.

EDIT: Yes, it's to you, I want to know why. I'm guessing it's related to OP and my posts.

That's because I'm controversial Pie. I don't hold the mainstream point of view for most topics, so I stir people up.

That's sweet of you to say though.

Tbh, I pride myself of thinking differently and challenging the status quo. It's a part of my life.

Keep in mind, my ideas are always changing, thanks to you guys and my own reasonings, but in general my PoV is often contrasting with most people, and that's how I like it.
