This is a serious topic, so Ill tread lightly.

This isnt an issue of tolerance so much as religious blasphemy. Christians have their beliefs and we are entitled to enforce them. That doesnt mean I hate homosexuals. I just believe that as a Christian you are to get married to the opposite sex to have a "biological" (key word) family. Also, many people want their legacy, their bloodline, to continue. To have a gay child means your entire family tree stops dead at that generation (biological one, again key word).

Was the father too harsh? Yes. More tolerance should have been applied. But from his point of view, as a father and a Christian, it must be upsetting that the child wont carry on the name and have that cliche picture perfect family.

But cases like this are actually not an issue compared to other religions. Not to deflect, but Islam/Muslim parents typically react much harsher to these types of situations.

No, no you're not. At least not in a moral society.

This example went too far with the disowning and all, but every religion has their core principles. Christianity is the largest religion, so I think your comment shows your unwilling to accept that fact.

Nevermind how like I said before, Islam/Muslim parents have stricter beliefs on this matter and would react much more harshly, but oh nonono, we cant get into that. Lets bash Christianity because we can get away with it. Gimme a break.

I think it's more about bashing any religion that condemns natural acts out of ignorance. I hate any religion or religious sect or group that condemns homosexuality.

There's a lot of things people do in the name of god/religion that I flat out refuse to accept because it's barbaric or in some way ignorant or bigoted.  Circumcision is one of them, condenmnation of homosexuality or contraception is another big one; none of that even gets close to the horrible habit some groups have that seems to urge them to kill or eradicate or forcfully convert those who don't agree with them.

What's your stance on people who are not religious and yet disagree with homosexuality. They must exist! Militaristic chauvenists, I'm sure there are some out there that are not religious. American Beauty?

Given that we are getting an entirely one-sided perspective on the argument and that there is probably a whole lot of background to this that we obviously can't know, I think you guys are being unfairly judgmental. I can't seriously condone the general notion of a father abandoning his son like this, but the mere fact that the son decided to put something so personal on the internet as a way to show how "evil" his father is really degrades any argument he may have been trying to make about family relationships.
Honestly, respect should go both ways; the father should not have restricted his son's freedom this way, but the son should also have considered altering his own lifestyle if his father disapproved of it this much.

Sexuality does not equal lifestyle.

I'm sorry. I'm rarely in this sort of discussion as I don't even have much of an opinion on this subject so I have absolutely no idea what your point is.

Also, I didn't actually say that or even mean to say that. He can't alter the fact that he is sexually attracted to the same gender so I obviously wasn't suggesting that. He can obviously use some self-control and refrain from actually acting upon this instinct of his, which is what his father disapproves of so much, though, which is what I meant.

I don't like them either, but they're infinitesimally rare compared to those who condemn it for religious purposes.  I've never personally met someone who condemned homosexuality that wasn't doing it 'becuase god calls it an abomination'.

I disagree. I think that most religions (at least in their basis and at the time of their foundation) preach peace, love and tolerance. Its the people themselves that corrupt that and abuse it for their personal greed and power. Religious institutions were also guilty of this

The belief itself is still horribly flawed and illogical, regardless.  I've made it clear there are two main things I hate about religion:

1 - the ignorant faith-based belief system based not on the slightest bit of logic, rationality, or science.

2 - The people who use this belief system as a launching point for their hate or misinterpret it so they can be bigoted/violent.

Pretty simple, really.

To be fair, all institutions are equally vulnerable to be hijacked by bigots. The supposedly atheist Soviets had their moments of anti-semitism, the "all men are created equal" government of the USA for racism, etc.

Hell, look at Chik-Fil-A. Chicken restaurant hijacked to being a homophobe's bully pulpit.

Me either, then again they are rare.

I think Nazist germany included homosexuals in the atrocities of the holocaust though.

You said that you are entitled to enforcing your beliefs, like enforcing a law. All I can say is that a society that works that way is a theocracy, and they usually don't work out that well for people.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Sad to see, but understandable. His son took a stance that the father could not accept and he handled the situation in a calm manner. Some people don't compromise their beliefs, even for their own family. Glad to see he took a stand.
