Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony having a difficult time getting third party support for the Vita

As we approach the first anniversary of the PS Vita’s Japanese debut, worldwide sales of Sony’s flashy new portable system can be described as slow but steady.

Despite an initial offering of what has been described as one of the strongest software lineups for any piece of hardware, Sony is still finding it difficult to attract third party developers to the Vita.

We’re having a more difficult time than we had anticipated in terms of getting support from third-party publishers, but that’s our job,” Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida told PlayStation: The Official Magazine in a recent interview.

We will continue to talk to development communities and publishing partners and tell them why Vita can provide a great experience for the IPs they have and I hope the Assassin’s Creed game will prove that."

The exploding popularity of mobile/ social sector has developers anxious to shift focus to that  growing market, according to Yoshida. However, he still believes Sony can attract small, independent studios with the Vita and PS Mobile.

Vicious cycle. Wads of money need to be thrown.

Exclusive cod, ac and bio shock? Can't be doing too bad. It's japanese devs they seem to be struggling with.

Time for hype

their job is to make sure they make first party games that sell the system which in turn should encourage 3rd parties to make games for it. As long as they rely on third parties they will die. This is not the PS2 days anymore Sony

Vita is more expensive to develop on. Problem is that they're making console games on a portable system when they should be making portable games on a portable system. I don't know about you guys but I would rather do a couple Layton puzzles or a few quick levels of Mario Kart while I'm on the bus than a deep Uncharted story. Uncharted is meant for a console experience.

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

The third parties are what helped the Playstation brand grow so big. They can't live on just their first party titles like Nintendo can.

TGS should give a clearer picture on Japanese third party support for Vita.

That's why I think the Vita already has one foot on the grave. After nearly a year of being released the Vita has manged to sell only 2 Mil units and sales continue to falter now and again in all territories. The only thing Sony could probably do (a sour and painful way) is to pay/fund software development for 3rd parties to gain important 3rd party exclusives to incite a probable buy for the gaming public. Another way is to cut the system's price $100 (not probable since they are already losing boats load per system) in order to compete against the 3DS and upcoming game capable tablets like the google Nexus, Asus Infinity, etc (which are getting buttons with gadgets like wikipad).

Holidays will either be the nail in the coffin or the dramatic comeback.

According to developers this is absolutely not the case. Last we heard it was similar to PSP dev costs.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

its interesting because what made them big is now making them smaller!

Sony needs to find a new daddy!
