Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo: Too Big to Fail?

I never got the dust gathering thing. My 360 has always gathered the most dust followed by my PS3. I play my Dreamcast and PSP more often than those 2. I guess that is just me.

The only thing Nintendo needs to exceed the success of the Wii is to keep up the momentum of high quality games on the system. The system that was the least expensive and had the most good games always won.

Apparently Nintendo has enough money saved to last them four generations of reasonable loss. Don't know how accurate that is, though... And @zero129 Do you really think Nintendo won't fail? I just spent 15 minutes reading about how you think they will...

Zero didn't write the article.  He merely posted it from allyoucangeek.net.

This is a tad off topic, but I'm really sick of people writing pikmin 3 off. Calling it casual, etc. Try to get a casual player to play pikmin, they'll suck, hard. Its a pretty deep RPG that requires precision, patience , and time management. I think it will push systems once word gets out. Pikmin 1 and 2 were stellar games. In my mind they were on the same tier quality wise as WW, and prime 1 and 2.

Don't forget to consider that casual gamers on any of the consoles really don't care much for the incremental changes we're seeing in a ton of these established games.  Hell a ton of us zealots are getting tired of finding a couple tiny updates in a $60 or $70 "upgrade".

Lastly, Nintendo has no momentum of high quality games right now other than the 3DS.  WII has been pretty stagnant IMO.  Probably because of the U coming.

True. Pikmin is a harcore game all the way around. Its not just a pick up and win game like an average FPS. In fact, I can't think of anything more casual by definition than a First Person Shooter like Halo and Call of Duty. The games are simple. You run around and shoot. The person who shoots the other guy enough times first wins. Thats about as casual as it gets.

This casual thing has really got to stop.

Pikmin really requires some precision and planning. You have so many dangers to worka round and a time limit to take care of everything.

"The mere thought of even a single generation without a Nintendo console seems unnerving and even blasphemous. Can the video game industry even exist without an active Nintendo system?"

Sega fans thought the same thing when the Dreamcast got dropped and Sega went multiplatform.  It was a dark day indeed, but life went on.

Can the video game industry exist without Nintendo? Yes it can.

Before Nintendo there was Atari, people called all video games "Atari" because it was ubiquitous. If Nintendo dropped out of the hardware business it we would still get Nintendo games just like how we still get Sega games. It's not ideal, but life would go one. Even if Nintendo went bankrupt it's studios and IPs would just get bought by another company or companies. Again it's not ideal, but the industry would keep chugging along. When Atari fell from grace Nintendo jumped it. If the same happened to Nintendo another would fill the void too.

If Nintendo goes multi and the quality of their games drops as much as Sega games when they went multiplatform it will be the darkest day in the history of gaming.

@Lillbroex: I'm on my phone, so I can't quote.

First off: "PS720" was a typo; I meant to say that WiiU needs to be stronger than PS360 - sorry about that!! That's why it didn't make any sense. Had the Wii had better graphics I believe it would have got way better 3rd party support, and being even more successful!

Secondly: what I meant with "ONLY Nintendo needs to be innovative?!" Actually was a jab (is that how you say it?!) Towards the article. I thought it hypocritical of the writer to criticize Nintendo for their lack of innovation. I have NEVER heard such accusations against Sony or Microsoft! Therefore, shouldn't Nintendo alone be accused of such a thing.

Thirdly: I do think this is a pretty weak launch line up if you compare it to the competition! Some old and inferior ports aint gonna cut it! Batman and mass effect will be old ports, and it's looking as if madden for WiiU will indeed be inferior.

Hope this cleared some of the confusion!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I see. That first statement led me to misintepret your direction.  You are certainly right about the failure to critisize Micrsoft and Sony. Even though Nintendos system is still at the top of the charts world wide,  people are foreasting nothing but doom while Sony has fallen to record lows and I hear almost nothing but praise about them.

All of this Nintendo hatred is really asinine of the gaming news media. Its leaning on shameful.

Ah, what would the world be without Nintendo is doomed articles? While no one is immune to failures, or even bankruptcy in any industry, Nintendo is too conservative to post conservative losses. I doubt we'll see Nintendo exit the gaming industry any time soon.

How can the author put Nintendo in an unthinkable pedestal yet propose a scenario of exiting the industry mainly because of two quarters of financial loses and lack of innovation with the Wii U?
Either way, this entire articles lacks solid facts that suggests Nintendo's definite exit, certainly not because of the Wii U.

The reason there are so many Nintendo is doomed articles due to hits, know-better attitude, or simply lack of understanding Nintendo's business model.

As a big Sega fan I can assure you that it would be a sad day, but that the pain fades.

The Master System was fun, the Genesis was legendary, the Saturn was underappreciated, and the Dreamcast was before it's time. Some of my all time favorite games are on those systems and I'll never forget the those glorious days when Sega was at the top of its game. I still enjoy a lot of Sega games, but there are things I miss, mostly the experimental stuff like Rez or the artistic stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga. I still play those games but I do long for more.

If the same happened to Nintendo it would be regretful. But there are more games out there, very good games, than just Nintendo games. It's unlikely that the quality would drop like it did for a time with Sega. What I loved about Sega was it was willing to put out a few misses if it scored a hit from its experiments. Nintendo is less about taking chances and more about capitalizing on what works with a twist. That's why Sega was hit or miss throughout each generations. I'm glad that Sega has found its way back to the light. I have no doubt Nintendo would be able to find its way back to the light as well if the same happened.

The world would keep on spining and Mario would keep on jumping.
