Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 2D Mario is in decline. Less than 42% sell-through for NSMB2

RolStoppable said:
Ignoring that this is a Galaki thread, I've seen first two days sales comparisons between NSMB and NSMB2 and they had similar numbers (both above 400k). The difference is that NSMB was four days on sale in its first week (managed 800k or something like that) while NSMB2 was only two days on sale in its first week.

Logically, if both games had the same initial shipment, then a lot of NSMB2's sales will be postponed to its second week, assuming a similar pace of sales. It's actually possible that NSMB2's second week will be bigger than its first week.

Just admit that you're wrong Rol. 2D Mario is dead (in a critical and development sense, im not willing to argue in a sales numbers sense at all).

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

This is what happens when you release the same game multiple times. NSMBU had a chance of being a big system seller but I don't see it happening now.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

While a 42% sell through rate is very poor, the actual sales on the game are still great.

Those who say digital sales are high, I'm really not convinced they're that good.

I think we can assume that with digital sales included NSMB2 first week will be better than NSMB relatively speaking: in two days NSMB2 have sold half the numbers of that of NSMB - but it's also had half the time to sell. Now, if it's been downloaded 100k times through the eShop, that would mean a sale of 500k in two days. That would equal 250k a day. Now looking at the NSMB numbers: with 800k sold copies the first four days that would mean a sale of 200k a day. So, relatively speaking NSMB2 would have sold better on a day to day basis.

But, as of right now we don't know. We'll have to wait for the digital numbers before we proclaim doom or gloom. Be patient people.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

This just in:

Pokémon Gold and Silver was a bomb! It only sold 23 million when Red and Blue did 30!

I am actually happy that this thread exists. Now I can ridicule every game for the next 2 years that is not selling better than the mother of all bombas that NSMB2 apparently is. So, pretty much every single game. Good times ahead.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

did this game come out in america. I haven't seen it.

It's not yet out in North America. You'll have to wait another 2 weeks or so. (August 19 for USA iirc)

So... I work in a game store. When we got Call of Duty MW3 in, we got literally thousands of copies in. We had a line to the front of the door for two days straight, but we only sold through about half of our stock. Sell through rate of about 50%

When Asura's Wrath came out, we received about 10 copies per system, and we sold out within two days. Sell through rate= 100%.

So using the same logic as TC, Call of Duty is on the decline, and is going to be taken down by Asura's Wrath. Of all the potential COD killers, I never saw this coming...

Can't believe it's taken 4 pages for someone to point out that the sell through percentage is meaningless.

It's the amount of unit sales that's important, and over 400K in two days is pretty good imo even before you think about taking the amount of digital sales into account. And the launch of NSMB 2 has also had a huge benefit in terms of 3DS and 3DS XL handhelds sold too. A 2D Mario is always a licence to print money for Nintendo - always has been, is now and always will be.
