Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 2D Mario is in decline. Less than 42% sell-through for NSMB2

So... I work in a game store. When we got Call of Duty MW3 in, we got literally thousands of copies in. We had a line to the front of the door for two days straight, but we only sold through about half of our stock. Sell through rate of about 50%

When Asura's Wrath came out, we received about 10 copies per system, and we sold out within two days. Sell through rate= 100%.

So using the same logic as TC, Call of Duty is on the decline, and is going to be taken down by Asura's Wrath. Of all the potential COD killers, I never saw this coming...

I love the 2D Mario games, but I also hate them. Mostly because I suck so much ass at them.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I was more interested in this, than Mario Wii U, before the reviews.

Im glad the average gamer isn't going to buy into this weak uncreative sequel.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Not too surprised. NSMB 2 looks pretty bland to me. Everything is recycled from the old games, with the only major addition being the gimmick of collecting coins. I don't play the games just to collect coins, I play them from the thrill of doging and taking out enemies. I feel like this game is missing the spirit of the classic Mario games. I'm sure it's a decent game in its own right, but it looks pretty mediocre compared to most other classic Mario games. NSMB U looks infinitly better.

Nintendo games usually have low sell-through but have very good legs that the end result is multiple times their initial shipment. This is nothing.

Lets see if I read this right:

Persona 4 Arena moves 138,000 units and has great sales, while New Super Mario Bros. 2 sells 400,000 units and has done dreadfully. Makes sense to me.

Lets wait till at least after the Holidays to see if 2D Mario is really on the decline, I mean it hasnt even been released in the biggest market yet and people here are already dooming one of the industry's best selling franchises....smh.

A Persona 4 spin off and a SMB game have 2 completly different sets of expectations in terms of sales.

This is definitely true but if the past has taught us anything, it's that Nintendo games normally don't have monster openings.  Their games have legs and sell a lot over a long period of time.
