That's only about 10,000 coins per unit sold.

Manuel said he has over 200 lives and at 100 coins each, that's 20,000...just in 1-Ups.

Not everyone's that good at 2D Mario's you know.
That's interesting. It's actually kind of depressing, too.
We already know the game sold over 400k physically. If we assume it sold at least enough digitally to get up to 500k (very likely), that's a maximum of 8k avg coins per player, which is... pretty lame. And it gets more lame as the sales go up. Suppose it sold 600k; that's under 7k coins per player.
To those saying that having more lives makes the game easier, I hardly think that's the case. There hasn't been a significant punishment for losing all of your lives in a Mario game in decades. It doesn't matter how many lives you have. You're just going to keep playing until you beat whatever level you're "stuck" on either way. What makes the game easier is the gold raccoon suit, which most gamers are too proud to stoop to.
An average of ~9.3k per person so far for physical copies.
EDIT: Annnd I was beaten.
The number has been updated to 10 billion coins.
Also, Nintendo reported that 242 persons so far have gathered 1 million coins.
I'm still at 50 thousand. :P
Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/
Those who tested just had a crappy download.
As I wrote in another thread it took me only 3-4 minutes to download. It was a smooth experience overall.
