there is a difference between operatring income and net income ... so probably sony did NOT make a profit ... stupid thread !!!

This. But since this is a Sony dominated forum your comment will probably be conveniently overlooked :)

Sony Corp. 2011 fiscal year ending March 31, 2012     Operating Income  -$860 million    Net Income  -$5.8 billion       See the (massive) difference?

So I believe this thread:

and the $1.2 billion loss is more like it.

Cherry-picking at it's finest.

correct me if I'm wrong isn't this thread about SCE , the part of the company most here on a game sales site are interested in , and people want to know how that part of the company went , also since this thread was about the games division why bring those figures here , no one was  using  the SCE figures to try to play down Sony problems as a Corporate entity .

I wish this site was all about sales like it use to be.

sales is what people use to be interested in  before the site changed so much. Now there are more random threads about random topics then sales data.

So a thread like this is something we shoudl enjoy as they are far and few in between.

Since the OP did not clarify, Sony's FY11 ended 31 March 2012.

Sony made money on gaming for the fiscal year ending 31 March 2012. But it has lost money on that division the last two quarters.

More importantly though, the entire company is awash in red ink and the gaming division is looked upon as a profit center in the current structure. So losing money is not a good thing.

The end of financial year, is that what the Japanese use to mark it? or is that an assumption people are using because in their country it is 31 March 2012?

Only reason I ask is because in Aus end of financial year is 30 June 2012.

for big 3,Sony and Nintendo financial year are April 1~March 31,only MS is July 1~June 30

so yeah Sony losing money now,OP's data is past

this thread sounds more desperate than cheering.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

You're desperate to downplay Sony's game divisions profit. You're in denial.  Accept the fact that they have been profitable in the past 2 years, how hard it may be for some people.

I believe we have been through what this thread is about, its not about Sony corp as a whole but Sonys game division. Hard to read? Sonys game division made 1/3 of Nintendos losses last Q.  Come back when you find the net income numbers for the different divisions, until then you have to do with operating income numbers, capiche?

Well net income is usually less than operating... but your point stands as operating income is what we are easily able to compare between companies. That and the example given by mitlar is not a great one in comparing operating and net income differences because Sony made some kind of big tax write off that year (can't remember the details, but it won't have been included in operating income, but is in net income)

Looking at Nintendo's history net income seems to waver between 40% and 90% of operating income most of the time, though that's for profit years... not sure if there might be a different trend for loss years (well actually there obviously will be a different trend mathematically, because 40% of a negative number is less loss) as Nintendo only have 1 of them, last year operating loss was 37 billion Yen while net loss was 43 billion Yen.

Very misleading title. Why didn't you write the profit was for last year?

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

For THIS FY we can already have ONLY Q1 data, so we CAN'T discuss the whole year, it has still to pass. Last FY data are the latest full year ones we have available.

I know Turkish put a deliberately mis-leading thread title, but seriously, it doesn't take 10 seconds to read through the OP and see what he means.

And even then, the thread title does clearly state "Game Division" and you come in here throwing around numbers for Sony Corporation as a whole.

And finally, the OP clearly says:

"Game - Operating Income - 29,302 (million yen)"

Even using your figures, which show Sony Corporation as a whole down $860 million, you think it's "more like it" that the game division on its own lost $1.2 billion last year?

I know everyone wants to remind us constantly at the moment that Sony Corp. are doing badly - which they are - but taking 10 seconds to just actual think before you post to make sure you're staying relevant to the topic really isn't hard =/
