Forums - Gaming Discussion - SE: Almost 300 employees on FFXIV 2.0, new title releases "suffered for 2 to 3 years"

rpgsite.net:

RPG Site: About how large now is the team working on FF14 and how has it - if at all - affected Square Enix development internally? Actually, I’m really interested in the way the team works so perhaps if you could describe a bit about day to day workings and various staff roles? Going back to the idea of 2.0 having an ‘epic Final Fantasy-style’ story, I’m really interested in who will be handling the scenario and dialogue writing—things like that.

Yoshida: Currently, the in-house team consists of almost 300 members. We also have outsourced a fair amount of work to third-party companies, so all-in-all, the team is fairly large.

Some of the core members include:

Naoki Yoshida – producer/director – (Dragon Quest series)
Yoshihisa Hashimoto – technical director – (CTO, Luminous engine)
Hiroshi Takai – assistant director – (Last Remnant, FFV, Romancing Saga series)
Akihiko Matsui – battle director – (Final Fantasy Series, FFXI)
Hiroshi Minagawa – UI director – (FFXII, Tactics Ogre)
Takeo Suzuki – art director – (FFXII)
Akihiko Yoshida – lead artist (FFXII, Tactics Ogre)

And many, many more Square Enix veterans

More from Square Enix's financial briefing:

For the revitalization of the FF brand, we decided not to shutdown FFXIV and to continue the services while adding improvements at the same time as rebuilding the game from scratch. As a result of the decision we made, it was inevitable to move the resources within the HD game to FFXIV and new title releases have suffered for 2 to 3 years.

So they've moved a significant portion of their "HD" resources to FFXIV's overhaul, with the rest presumably going to XIII sequels and DLC.  I think we can presume the development Versus and other HD titles (or the complete lack thereof) suffered as a result.

Interesting, but is it gonna be on current or next gen systems?

It will release on PS3 and PC roughly in January 2013.

versus please you goddamn knuckleheads

Versus, is looking more and more like a next gen game.

The only game to be developed over the course of three generations. Brilliant strategy SE

It's the new Duke Nukem Forever, soon they will announce that they are rebuilding the game for next gen using the Luminous Engine, over the next 3 years.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Would the game really have to be rebuilt? I was under the impression that the Luminous Engine was just the Crystal Tools/White Engine with more stuff in it.

Aren't we kinda at the point where engines don't need to be entirely reworked just to add new technologies?

From a consumer standpoint who plays FFXIV: Awesome!! I can't wait to see this new game =D They really should have retitled it, though, to make it appear as a completely new product to consumers.

From an analyst standpoint: Oh...wow...

"it was inevitable to move the resources within the HD game to FFXIV and new title releases have suffered for 2 to 3 years."

"2 to 3 years. 2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."2 to 3 years."

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Basically, EVERYONE is working for XIV ! This is kinda crazy but Square did fuck up BIG time with XIV and now they have to make the impossible happen to fix things again.

It's making me build up expectations even though I'm not a huge mmo rpg fan.

so let me get this straight, they are taking resources away from games that most people actually want to play and putting them into a game that only a handful of people actually care about? Alright
