I continue to maintain they should of sold themselves to EA.

Their board however didn't want to lose their jobs and worked against the general benefit of their shareholders.

Yeah yeah, EA is evil and all that... but that said. EA knows how to turn a profit.

Is this the same EA that has in the recent past made continued losses on large revenue .

The problem with Max Payne 3 was the enormous budget, apparently it cost over 100$ million. Absolutely ridiculous for a game like that.

That's effed up.  I mean, I know GTA 4 had a budget that high, but even that game shouldn't have needed that budget.  I mean if Naughty Dog can keep Uncharted in the 20 million, 2 year dev cycle then they could keep Max Payne in check.  As another comparison, God of War 3's budget was 50 million, came in under budget at 45 million (God of War 2 had the same budget) and about a 3 year dev cycle.

Yeah and Halo 3 only needed a budget of 55 million to make it one of the top selling shooters. IDK wth they were doin with max payne 3, graphics?

A game that manages to sell 3 million copies within months of release is disappointing sales. This means they spent way more than they should have making the game.

It is also another example where a new IP like Red Dead Redemption carries less risk and has more financial success, than trying to revive and keep relevant some old IP by spending shit tons of money while not creating shit tons of value for the gamer.

They have worked years on this game. It was supposed to release in 2009. And just imagine if Max Payne 3 dissapointed what will happen to games like The Last Guardian or Final Fantasy Versus.

I doubt they will do any better then Max Payne 3.  Its still doubtful if they will even be released this generation.

I honestly think there are two things happening.

1. Studios spending out of control.

2. Gamers expecting games to still cost low. Most will still wait for the discounts.

It doesn't surprise me some studios are switcing to free play model. That way they can slowly trinckle money from you for buying small items and you don't notice how much you spend over time.

Spending is out of control.  The game sold 3 million at full price.  Game isn't even discounted yet.  There's no reason why this game couldn't break even for any other reason.

Excerpts from Wikipedia:

Max Payne 3 will be Rockstar's "biggest and boldest marketing effort thus far". Highlights of the campaign will include prominent TV spots during the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final and other mainstream programming, as well as outdoor campaigns.[35] Rockstar Games ran a competition where its Twitter followers who tweet using the #MaxPayne3 hashtag through January 13, 2012, could see their likeness featured in the title's multiplayer.[13] Rockstar also ran another competition to win a trip from New York to São Paulo to attend at Sonar São Paulo, get a customized Max Payne 3 Xbox 360 console, and play the game a week before its official release.[36]

Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions features rewards respectively for PlayStation Home and Avatars.[42] Rockstar re-released the first Max Payne, subtitled Mobile, for iOS devices on April 12, 2012, with the Android version launching later. Max Payne Mobile has been optimized for both iOS and Android devices and features HD graphics, high-resolution textures, Social Club connectivity and user-customizable controls.[43] The Rockstar Games Social Club is a website that displays the gameplay statistics of registered users and feature competitions and awards based on player activity within the game, which will support both Max Payne Mobile and Max Payne 3.

Can we assume all of these came out of the budget?

I doubt the Home and Avatar sutff are.  Max Payne on IOS and Android port should pay themselves off hopefully.  The Uefa commercial might have.
