(..) Hopefully you wanna help kids and poorer folks, but that's not how Rome rose to become the nr 1 power in Europe for about 1000 years. (..)

Over 2000 years in fact.

The Empire from 27 BC to 1453 AD. If you include the Republic and the Kingdom before the Empire (which you should, they're basically the same), it existed from 753 BC to 1453 AD. They were the most powerful nation in the world about half of that time, which okay is about a 1000 I guess .

Arguably no other country ever has been this succesful.

But anyway, China could be it though.

Spanning several dynasties and political forms they're basically ancient too, about as old now as the Romans were when they finally fell. So all they have to do is indeed to endure a little longer. Cranking up welfare and social conditions should be their number 1 goal. Their stellar economic growth in the last decade seems pretty amazing, but in reality they are still many sea-miles behind the West (meaning Western Europe, USA and other affiliates). They're aren't even in the same ballpark yet. I reckon it won't happen anytime soon, if ever, but if they keep up the growth in economy while improving their welfare and social services, they could truly become a Super Power. No need for anything drastic in this day and age, they already have more than enough (military) power to be able to prevent outside medling, but the 'tradional' conquering of lands wouldn't do anymore good. It's all about wealth.

yeah i was counting from the punic wars and onwards .p but youre completely right you are!

... They're already a super power.

china IS a super power yet. we just don't take them too serious and that is a good strategy for them.
we paid development aid far longer than they needed it. they gained knowledge from joint ventures and now they start to get really big. but fact is, they are bigger than we want them bo be - and the next era begins now, and it begins there. the western world will be bound to 2nd place, but it is important to understand that's not too bad.

the only thing is we have to start to take them serious. give them more rights. once they are really big they will begin to become angry about us. once they are stronger but still have no equivalent rights they'll start a economy war. some say they already do so.
2nd, they will face some serious trouble once people become more educated. become more consume-oriented. i guess not later than in 10 years you will see tanks rolling against protesters, again. this will get bloody and it will be a good step into the future for them. well, lets hope there begins a slow (being slow is important in chinas case) process of democratic thoughts.

Just keep doing what they're doing - military stuff isn't needed to become a superpower in the modern world - it's all about economics

Very true. Look at how strong South Korea is becoming just because of their burst of popularity around the world.

They have Media being sold all over, Car lines that are majorly popular, and a large tourist draw.

YOU NEED MILITARY STUFF to become a superpower. Along with economic might It is the second part of what defines a superpower in any world, regardless if it's ancient, modern or (most likely) the future.

Economics are important but unreliable, what happens if the economy collapses?

As former US president Truman said about sitting at the top table among countries "you must have candy (money) but carry a big stick (military)".

China and others are rising but are no threat to the US, yet.

The US biggest threat is itself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To be a superpower you need to come in the top two at olympic games.

I just wish they'd stop being a dictatorship! That would have been nice.

China is NOT a super power yet! They're getting there for sure, but right now they're a MAJOR power - and there's a difference between the two.

Then I guess they're a SuperPower.

You don't know how extensive their Military is, so I'm guessing it's large since they've, obviously been trying to build it for years.

For my money what they have to do is...

Be nicer to Europe... or surrounding asian countries.

Or wait for countries within their influence sphere to get more powerful.

China doesn't really have any influence projection or military projection.

At the moment their main realm of influence is really... Africa... and they're making inroads to the middle east.... but really... most of asia seems pretty set up to "bottle" China.  With that being an actual strategy.

To be taken seriously China must do several things.

1. Stop mistreating it's own people.
2. Stop protecting nations that mistreat their people.
3. Send as much aid around the world as the USA.
4. Stop artificially deflating the Yuan to appear economically stronger than it is.
5. Pass labor laws and outlaw child labor.
6. Stop bullying it's neighbor nations and laying claim to nearby independent sovereign nations.
7. Stop pumping pollutants into the air and dumping waste into the ocean.
8. Stop arresting political protesters.
9. Build a healthy tourism program.
10. Have as many or more nukes than the other super powers.

That last one is pretty important.

Most of the points cannot be taken to seriously tbh, and only americans could create such as list when they are not too different from the Chinese.

2- what about USA and Arabia S or Israel

4- exactly what you are doing with the dollar

7- haha, good one.

- the US is not too different & being a superpower nowdays it doesnt have anything to do with what you listed.

What does America, Religion, and Meat have in common? Those who hate these will hijack conversations and twist them into insufferably negative mudslinging tirades with no regard for anyone else's viewpoint.

I had forgotten this truth and mistakenly posted an innocent comment. Lesson learned, I'm going back to the video game side of this forum were at least the fanboys only hate meaningless piece of plastic.

As we say in America, have a nice day.

I dont hate America, religion or meat at all. I Just wanted to point out that most of the points you made IMO, dont represent what a supero power is.

I could say that my country almost fulfill all those points, however we are very very far from being a superpower.

& like we say in Costa Rica, Pura vida.
