I didn’t work with the GC much. It seems really flexible. Like you could do anything, but nothing would be terribly bad or great. The GPU wasn’t very fast, but it’s features were tragically underutilized compared to the Xbox. The CPU had incredibly low-latency RAM. Any messy, pointer-chasing, complicated data structure you could imagine should be just fine (in theory). Just do it. But, more than half of the RAM was split off behind an amazingly high-latency barrier. So, you had to manually organize your data in to active vs bulk. It had a half-assed SIMD that would do 2 floats at a time instead of 1 or 4.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing.

From what I have heard PS2 is harder to develop for than the PS3. But his description is hilarious.

so Microsoft knows how to give developers what they want Sony head quarters don't

First of all, this guy is saying what we all know, that the (Direct) X Boxes were built as stand alone gaming PCs; so basically Microsoft cheated their way into console gaming by bringing PC developers. At what exact point since the birth of the Playstation did Sony target PC developers ?

My problem here is that PC gaming and console gaming used to be something different. Now consoles are all about Elder's Scrolls, CoD and Crysis, great games don't get me wrong but those are PC games, what happened to the innovative gameplay and exotic story telling of console gaming ?! Why on earth don't we just get new gfx cards for the PC then and be done with it.

Second of all, who the hell is Cory Bloyd and what on earth has Munkeyfun studio made ?!

Not much in here past the N64 phase, console or handheld, Nintendo-wise

yup, this is a western developer, all right.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Just a bit of a slightly more positive Sony-related note that he posted after this gained so much attention:

"This has picked up a lot more attention than I expected when I tossed it together! I'll add that even though I give Sony a hard time, I really do enjoy pounding on their machines. Sony consoles have always been a challenge. But, if you are willing to work with them instead of against them, they love you back tenfold."

On a side note, I'd really like to see what he has to say about the Vita - whether it is indeed the easiest PS platform to develop on since the PS1, and how it compares to the others.

I dont think it matters (with relevence to the developer) what Microsoft did to get developers to like there console it is what Sony didnt do to get them liking the PS3 at the start it is not only this Cory Bloyd that has said that it was difficult to program for back then.

They had a run of amazing 1st party games like uncharted and other developers start releasing games of better quality, is it a concidence or did something happen to resolve the issues, from the sounds of it, it was the developers that resolved the issue and not the people issuing the SDK's or whatever SCEI should have been doing. thats why I said what I said, its like the people up top at SCEI seem to have dropped the ball and didnt even try to go get it a again, the developers knowing how important it was decided to do something about it and did.

Its just shows how good sony's first partys are compared to most 3rd party studios.

@ bolded: is it not still there in the first party games, dont know I have not played a game from last gen in a while. if it is effecting the quality of the game that isnt very good.

on a side note if I get things wrong sorry im just speculating on most things.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

nothing we didn't already know, yet funny to read the PS3 paragraph.
