I deffinitly get where you are coming from. But for me there isn't a choice right now. At least not a good choice. If I want to play the best games I have to buy all the console. The only choice is deciding whether to pay for them all or deny myself some games. That's not a fun choice. Hardcore gamers just end up having to pay for it all. Fanboys don't make a choice either, they just blindly stick to one side and turn their noses up at the other.
One console would be cheaper and more accessible. It would end stupid fanboy wars. I'd love to go back to a time like when there was just Nintendo and Sega. Those were simpler times, better times.
As for paying to play online. It's really not that bad and it's pretty cheap too. XBLA is a pretty nice service. Would I like it too be free. Yes, I'd like everything I enjoy to be free. But it's not in the cards and next gen I expect Sony, merger or not, to switch to a paid model similar to XBLA.
