Forums - Sony Discussion - How bad is the PSV really doing vs the PSP? (actual numbers within)

raw manufacturing is not the same as total costss for Sony
do you believe they are making 90$ profit?

Sales are poor, of course. But the question for me is how much money costs Sony to manufacture each PSV ?

I remember reading an article from Eurogamer which said total costs were $160 but is sold for $249. If that's true, then Sony can handle the poor sale.

Vita sales are about 45~50 weekly.

Eurogamer and others were only stating cost of materials which is not at all the 'total cost' of the item. Its arguable if either version of hte Vita is make or losing a little no each unit sold.

Example, we know 3DS cost of materials was around $120 at launch with price of $249. THat was a profitable price, yet they are losing money at $169 and are scheduled to be profitable some time this year (maybe already).

Cost of materials doesn't include boxing, other materials in packing like manuals/accessories, storage/shipping, marketing, etc.

I think after the holiday we will know more... Who knows maybe a large group of gamers will get one for Assasin's Creed and COD..We have pre order numbers?

How someone can say psvita has not unique games!!!

PSVita has more unique games than in psp in the first year like Gravity Rush and escape plan and soon soul sacrifice and  Sound Shape.

Yes psvita doing bad and worst than psp but could be better in the end of the life of psp.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

I honestly believe this PSvita will be sub 30k globally by June of 2013 (and I'll bet on it). It's not selling well, has no serious system sellers, and both dedicated portable gaming consoles are on the decline (in comparison to last gen). How is the Vita supposed to compete when most of the people who got a PSP used it as a media device (from my experience). We have smart phones for that now and the PSVita is just way too similar to a smartphone and with market conditions the way they are people are going to invest in a nice smartphone, over a nice media/gaming device. It just doesn't have 3d gimmick/Nintendo name brand games that is making the 3DS somewhat of a success.

But are any of those games potential system pushers like Monster Hunter or Pokemon? That's what matters. Flow is a cool unique game too, but its not why I bought my PS3.

People is who make a game a system pushers or not even if a developper spend billions dollars of marketing and people are not interest i the they won't succeed.

You said psvita don't make good number because it's lack of unique games but it's not true what you said because not unique games in psp and in psv sold better then unique games.

Why you camplain about lack of unique games in psv when you didn't buy your ps3 for unique games like Flow?

I bought my Wii for Nintendo games.

The Wii didnt' get good 3rd party games so I decided to buy a 2nd console.

I chose the PS3 for Uncharted, bluray, and free internet play. All three were unique features including a specific game. Basically those three things were greater in importance to me than 360's unique Gears of War and the fact that all my friends have one.

People buy hardware largly for a set of unique games and/or features. PSV at this point doesn't have this unique set of games/features that justify the higher price. However, the AC bundle that includes a 4GB memory card goes a long way to approaching that. Though I don't think home console knock-off games will be a big system pusher.

Pokemon's main games only come on portables for a reason. They'd sale great on the home consoles, but Nitnendo is smart enough to keep them only on the portables in order to create demand for that hardware.

Monster Hunter was the same thing for the PSP and likely will be for the 3DS.

PSV doesn't have THAT game yet, if ever. Sony themselves don't seem to get that and have yet to make a game like that on PSP or PSV. All their games are side quests to their home console games. They need a unique and high quality IP that is on portables only.

You mean like Gravity Rush or hopefully Soul Sacrifice?

I agree that Sony perhaps in the past has neglected to put out a really killer handheld-only IP, but they're certainly trying a bit harder with the PS Vita.

Plus, to be fair, many of the PSP's biggest selling games had console counterparts (GTA, Monster Hunter, Daxter, Ratchet, Gran Turismo etc.)  Whether you see the PSP as a success story or not depends on your own opinion though.

IDK. I guess their launches will tell us if they have that appeal and allow it to overcome the price point barrier.

I have always considered the PSP a success for Sony. First time anyone really competed with Nintendo in that market. However, I've already stated many times I think PSV will be a failure with a short life. It should have been a smartphone with a different layout more similar to the Xperia Play (but with real controls and same current specs)... but that is in a entirely different thread of mine.
