Sound like a fun time for a much needed price cut. Still doing good for a nearly 7 old console.

And then it fell back rapidly. predictions at the time were for a long and sustained boost. Didn't happen. Go on then, 1st week prediction?

I'm no expert on 'sustained boosts' but I'd say a force that droped the PS360 gap from 8m to nearly 3m in a matter of months counts as a sustained boost.

THANK YOU! finally some facts straight to his face! explain yourself kowen. is that not a sustained boost?

Wow, lol. Calm down big boy.

Predictions were made for massive boosts that would continue, didn't happen.  I'll find the thread later.

im perfectly calm! jay hit the nail on the head with that one. im surprised i didnt even remember that. link that thread if you find it.

Im fairly sure the difference in sales before/after Slim could prove said sustained boosts?

What were PS3 sales at before Slim? 25 Million?

?? The year before the Slim, 2008, the ps3 sold just over 10m units. The year the Slim released, 2009, were nearly 3m higher than 2008. And the following year, 2010, sales were 1m higher than 2009. Sales never dropped back down. The ps3 saw a steady increase from that point....a 'sustained boost' if you will. I could use 2011 also, but that year had its own price cut. Anyway, How long of a boost are you talking about?

It`s only natural. Xbox 360 was the first to arrive - and if not for Kinect it could be selling worse or have been replaced last year or this year.
I don`t know if a price cut will help for MS and Sony aswell. Console prices are still too high for a 50$/€ (don`t see it being more than that) will make that kind of sustained impact.
Thruth is, Wii U is around the corner and even if Xbox 360 goes to 149, it will be the bare bones model, because the ones with Kinect and/or a higher HDD, will be about 200. If Wii U launches at 300 and PS3 gets a similar price cut to the Xbox 360 i just don`t see either MS and Sony enjoying a sustained sales boost.

If the cut happened in a time where the release of a new console wasn`t imminent i could see MS and Sony taking more benefits from it.
If we were talking about 99/149 prices for the 4GB/Kinect consoles, than things could be different.
I think both MS and Sony took to much time to cut prices.

Still, i don`t really think that MS needs to cut the price now seeing as Halo4 and COD BO2 will push it up really well for the season!

Good grief. Some folks really need a break from the forums (or take a step back from their keyboards and have a breather).

Anyway, I don't expect Microsoft to react this holiday. They'll get plenty from the Halo 4 console and Black Ops II. The $399.99 price point of that Halo 4 console (just like the $399.99 Gears of War system price point last year) really tells of their plans for this holiday (although I'm sure there will be temporary deals slashing prices set for the Christmas season). Spring at the earliest for price reductions, which will have them ride out this holiday, behind the PS3 for all of 2012, and become much more competitive just before the next Xbox comes out (I doubt they care about coming in last place at this point).

lol it is getting pretty fired up in here but this is till nothing compared to how crazy vgchartz was before.

. 360 sales also increased in each of those years.... That was the market

The Market?? Lol. The X360 did not see increased sales in 2009. You are right though, it did see increased sales in 2010, which funny enough, began around E3 2010. Could it be because of the X360 Slim or just a coincidence with the market. But I guess you're right, the X360 did increase AFTER it got its own slim.

If it was the market, why were the PS3 & the X360 the only consoles to increase. Why no Wii? Why were the only consoles to increase the ones that DID get remodels? Are you going to say the "PS3 & 360 market" was the only market to see a boost? How convenient...

Regardless of if the market caused the increases or if it was the Slim (it was the Slim), it still disproves your past claim that the PS3 did not see a sustained boost.

Hardware sales have slowed down (Halo 4 should help the quarter it's in but without a price cut there's probably no real chance of beating last years numbers for that quarter) but in terms of software and Xbox Live the system is doing well considering its age.

Lets have a look at some of the biggest third parties out there...

UBISOFT

ELECTRONIC ARTS   (Notice the difference from Q4 FY11 and Q4 FY12)

TAKE TWO

ACTIVISION

Add to that the fact that Xbox LIVE has grown and games like Minecraft breaking XBLA records and it's pretty obvious that the system is going very well.
