I wouldn't even put Smash Bros in the top four killer apps for the Wii.  Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart are the games that drove the Wii to record breaking sales from 2006 - 2008.

1. Wii Sports
2. Mario Kart Wii
3. Wii Fit
4. NSMB Wii

Smash Bros might make it as number 5, but I would have to think about it more.

"The word refers specifically to that one piece of software that drives people to buy a piece of hardware morso than anything other."

Yes, that is exactly it.

It has nothing to do with graphics or maxing out a systems capabilities.  If people are using it that way, then they have twisted the original meaning.  I have seen the same twisting with the phrase "AAA" too.  These terms have nothing to do with graphics, but the games that do fit those meanings tend to have high production values.  People who didn't understand the meaning have just taken to using them to mean "great looking game".

(As an aside, AAA really means a game that is guaranteed to bring in a ton of money for the company making it.  Thus it justifies a higher budget for itself, and has high production values.)

How much it sold does not determine if its a killer app. It is determined by how many people bought the system "for the software". Nobody felt that they had to get Wii Sport. Smash Brothers on the other hand brought a lot of first timers to the system.

You have to be joking.

Smash Bros sold 7 million on the Gamecube.  It sold 11 million on the Wii.

Mario Kart sold 7 million on the Gamecube.  It sold 32 million on the Wii.

And you somehow think "Smash Brothers on the other hand brought a lot of first timers to the system."  How can you think that?

Here is some more.

Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus combined to sell 43 million.

Wii Sports sold 79 million.  It did 3.77 million in Japan where it was not bundled with the console.  It is the second best selling Wii game in Japan, only behind NSMB Wii.  Wii Sports moved consoles.  Worldwide.  End of story.

Speaking of NSMB Wii, it sold 25 and a half million.

Wii Sports Resort sold 30 million.

I love Smash Bros.  It is my most played game on the Wii.  But what you are saying is ridiculous.

The game selling a lot and people buying the system because the game are two different things.

Killer app does not equal game with the highest sells. It equals the software that made people buy some hardware when they would previously have not even considers. A game that is so good that it drives them to get the system.

Sorry but you are wrong. Lots of people baught the Wii for WIi Sports. Hence why it sold so well. It was about the motion controls for these mini games Wii Sports offered.

People bought the Wii for the gimmick in passing. Wii Sports just so happened to come with it. Nintendo has been doing this for years ever since the first bundle with Duck Hunt. I want to see the sales of Wii Sports outside of bundles.

fair point. I pretty much meant that Wii Sports being the best example of the motion control gimmick as you call it, is why they bought the Wi in the first place.

If we look at Japan (as the game was not bundled there) about 30% of Wii Owners picked up Wii Sports (according to VGCHartz numbers).

I wish I could tell at what point in time the Wii vs the Game was in japan just to see if the inital burst was because of the gimmick (i.e. Wii Sports) then later sales was due to the actual Nintendo first party games or if Wii Sports has had stead sale legs since launch.

Something is only a gimmick when it is thrown in just get attention but isn't really a necessary or standard funcitonal feature. The Wii and its controls were not nor have they ever been a gimmick. Move and Kinect, for exmaple, would be a gimmick because there sole purpose was to try to get something of Nintendo's success with they on unqiue variation to the motion concept. They are not a standard feature and the controls are completely auxiallary.

The Wiis motion controls are not optional. They were put there to be and are the main intended method of play, and therefore not a gimmick.

We can confirm at least 4 million sells of Wii Sport unbundled.

I agree that Killer app doesnt have to completely equate to game sales.  But there is absolutely no doubt that Wii Sports and Wii Fit specifically sold tons of systems along with their software sales.  I know families that just wanted to play games like wii sports and I've known teachers that bought Wiis just for Wii Fit.  So they are Killer Apps for Wii, even if you like to think of Killer Apps as more blockbuster type of games.

Wii Sports wasn't bundled in Japan, and it has an attach rate of 25% - that is, one in four Japanese Wiis has a copy of Wii Sports bought for it.

EDIT: Hmmm... looks like this had already been addressed. I guess I should make it a point to read the rest of the thread before replying, just to make sure I don't repeat somebody else.

hahaha Ibet you calculated the 25%, I just did a guestimate in my head on rounded numbers.

I'm a mathematician, I'd seen the numbers and approximated from there. Indeed, I did it from memory, because I remembered something in the vicinity of 3 million (I think it might have been 3.2 or something? I'm still not checking), and the Wii was at something like 12 million in Japan (again, from memory). 3/12 is 1/4 = 25%.

Well, I was basing it on memory. And looking into it, there was a minor flaw in my memory - it's 3.7, not 3.2 million (total Wii sales in Japan is 12.5 million, which was about where I thought). So 30% is almost exact, as it so happens.

Yes, a game that is so good it drives them to get the system for that game.  Which means they buy the system and the game.

Then why did so few people buy Smash Bros?

(As compared to the other killer apps I named.  Mario Kart alone would be at least 3 times the killer app.)
