Forums - Nintendo Discussion - DS vs 3DS - First round: Third-party games!

After hearing about Legend of Heroes coming to the 3DS today I've felt the need to create this thread to show how much (like in astronomical measures) the support from DS to 3DS improved. It's almost comical the difference. Reasons for this are varied, but I think the most accurate one is how the DS was viewed as the next gamecube next to the PSP, the next PS2.

These, my fellow VGCharters, are the biggest games released on the DS during 2004-2005, more or less the same time frame the 3DS is right now, try not to laugh. Mind you, there are great games here, but not a single one remotely big.

1 - Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow

Great game, mind you. Even though not big in sales by any means, at least makes for a good poster-child

2 - Bust-a-move DS

When you think of great libraries you think of Bust-a-move

3 - Mr. Driller DS

Ditto for Mr. Driller, I mean, the guy is in the industry for how long? A legend!

4 - Bomberman DS

Now that's a nice thing to have, not kidding - I want one desperately for the 3DS. But, again, no biggie.

5 - Dragonball Supersonic Warriors 2

Dragon ball games... whatever

6 - Harvest Moon DS

Great game, but nothing to brag about too

7 - Ridge Racer DS

And this was before Kaz made Ridge Racer big!

8 - Jump Super Stars

Aha, finally a big game! But Japan only.

9 - Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney

A port of a GBA game. Got way bigger than expected

10 - Trauma Center - Under the Knife

Another low budget game that turned out to be a surprise

And... that's it! Amazing (for the bad), isn't it?

Now let's compare it to the 3DS to see the bigger than life difference. I'll only name 10, but you'll see the difference.

1 - Monster Hunter 3G

Part 1 of the plan to conquer japan. Huge, nuff said.

2 - Dragon Quest Monsters Terry Wonderland and Rocket Slime

The beggining of a partnership that will spawn lots and lots of huge games, no doubt

3 - Kingdom Hearts 3D

A full KH game. Big!

4 - MGS 3D

A port, but a symbolic one, imo.

5 - Resident Evil: Mercenaries and Revelations

What? Two RE games, including a full fledged one? Madness

6 - Inazuma Eleven Go

Big game of a superb series, imo.

7 - Professor Layton (s)

Another huge game available, with seques already in the oven

8 - One Piece - Unlimited Cruise

One big game from a huge manga

9 - Final Fantasy Theatherrhytmn

Great brand to have and may, as the producer already said it, spawn a whole game series.

10 - I know I said I'll only post 10, but I have to cheat: Harvest Moon, Etrian Oddysey, Rune Factory, Mario and Sonic, Hatsune Miku, Tales of the Abyss, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor, Gundam, New love plus, Senran Kagura, Street Fighter, Tekken, Heroes of Ruin, Lego games, Sonic Generations, Shinobi, Angry Birds Trilogy and lots (and I mean lots!) more! And I'm not even counting the ones for the rest of this year  and the ones announced for next year (MH4, for example).

To think the first semi-big third party game the DS had was Final Fantasy III remake (in august 2006, two years after launch!!!) is really food for thought:

1 - How the DS shined bright as it had based only on innovative features and 1st party games

2 - How the 3DS library is 103434% more powerful than the DS. Imagine what's coming next?

Seriously, add this with Nintendo always great first party games.... and wow.

Actually, I always thought the support for 3ds was great... but I never thought the support for the DS was that abysmal!

That's what 150 million unit sales will do for ya! The DS took so many of us by surprise, great handheld.

it seemed after the huge sucess of the ds all the companies wanted to take a pie of the sucessor.I cant believe in japan there is a console with monster hunter, dragon quest, mario and pokemon...PURE EPIC lol

Only thing it needs is a full fledge final fantasy game

... in Japan.

I get your point and I agree, but you forgot to mention the bestselling (3 million copies) 2004/2005 third party DS game: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/2111/sonic-rush/

You're right! This is a big one! But released almost at the end of 2005, barely making it :)!

Scrap, err... Mr. Driller

This is not an 100% accurate list though, I never even researched the sales for the most, just got the names I recognized most TBH. But I think it's sufficient to prove a point.

Is Monster hunter out in the west?

Nothing special like Jump SuperStar, Phoenix Wright or Trauma Center in the 3DS list, maybe Final Fantasy Theatherrhytmn.
