Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pachter about the Sony/Gaikai deal inside

Are you saying that because movies require no rendering time and are pre-rendered, thus require 0 "Game Pipeline" latency?

Ultimately Gakai seems to be achieving it using alternative methods and solutions. I'm not sure if they can pull off 1080p, since the higher the resultion, the higher the latency (compression, #packets required). But better graphics won't affect latency in any way after the rendering stage I think. It's only resolution that radically affects performance if I understand correctly.

With that in mind, will 1080p be possible anytime soon?

The resolution is actually pretty poor when I use gaikai, the performance is OK in terms of frame-rate/lag, but I get all that nasty crap that happens to video streams. As far as I can tell they do change graphics settings depending on your connection, on my internet I get what looks like low-med settings at "720p" (certainly doesn't look like 720p) on most games, but on my friends internet we got what looked like high settings and the resolution looked abit sharper.

1080p? Dunno, my guess is 2020-25 will be when streaming games starts becoming the norm, in the same way that streaming movie/tv shows is becoming the norm today, but my guess is as good as any.

System specs are pretty much dependent on your internet (same with the lag).

Oh god if that is true I won't be able to play any game properly, my internet sucks!

Yep ;(

Mine sucks too, need to get a job and/or hope for better internet expansions/competition.

lol I just tried to stream Alan Wake and it says I don't even have the minimum requirements for a quality gameplay, if this becomes a norm for the future of gaming I'm pretty much screwed until I get a decent internet connection

It's true. I just went to Gaikai's  website and tried to stream Crysis 2. I can't say it ran at more than 15-20 fps. And my internet is 800kps(supposed to be 5.5mbs, but this is At&T we're talking about).

If anyone thinks this will replace consoles, they should just try it out for 10 minutes. They'll come running back.

I might be wrong, but I think your internet problems stem from the fact that ISP's list their internet speeds in "Bits" while most downloads calculate speed using "Bytes."

And Bytes are 8x larger than Bits, I believe. That would mean a speed of 5.5"mbps" (listed in bits) is actually around 700KBPS (bytes).

I think...

I think Sony is once again too early in their approach to make this investment feasible. There are still a lot of countries where the internetz is not fast enough or capped with download limits. Also, wouldn't this kind of streaming tech produce A LOT of traffic, especially if the next Playstation would merely be a service like this and not a console? I also don't like the idea to be dependable on the internet to get access to my games. Are they even my games or do I merely rent them for the time I use them? There are a lot of people who complain that they are forced to be online to play even single player games and I am one of them. I don't like this direction but to each their own I guess. It's good that every console manufacturer chooses their own path so I still can choose what style suits me best.

Watched ign video one the issue. They seem to use this to promote their TVs. Why buy this other tv tv, when i could buy this sony tv/videogame device.

So instead of buying their next 599$ console I need to buy their next 1000$+ TV to play Uncharted & co.? See my other comment above, I don't like this at all.

Yes, but once these next TVs that have their own apps (already available) become mainstream and are in homes, people no longer need to buy TV or console. It would be a simple app away.

Gakai works with server clusters located near the area of service. If the latency is too high in one area or they can't offer service in that area due to cost, they just won't and a message will appear to the user notifying them as such.

i dont care, i only want to play my games at stable frame.. if this can be used for that, well, amazinf

Your answers don't put me at ease at all. I don't see the big difference in buying a new console every 6 years and buying a new TV set every 10 years or so. Even if I could use the TV for 25 years, who does that at the pace the tech is evolving right now?

Also, the possibility of simply being denied access to my games due to high traffic or internet outage or whatever is not a future I am looking forward to. Maybe it will be good but right now I see a lot of question marks and possible bottlenecks. I just like to have my games at arms length and at my disposal whenever I want to play them.

I thought I explained it to you. Once the TV is bought, the service is eternal so long as the streaming media SP is willing to offer it.
