Forums - Sony Discussion - Nintendo gets a pass Just because they're Nintendo That Sony Isn't Allowed To Have

First off, the Wii is better for Nintendo fans than the Gamecube was, many times over. We got two 3D Marios, two Zeldas, a 2D Mario, a new DKC, a Metroid Prime game, a Paper Mario game, a 2D Wario platformer, two Kirby games, the Virtual Console allowing you to play all the classics you might have missed out on, a Mario Kart with online, and a few really great RPG's published by Nintendo.

In the eyes of a core-nintendo-fan that isn't a graphics whore, the Wii ROFLstomps the Gamecube.

If anyone got a free pass this gen it's Sony. Any other console released that way would have gone the way of the Saturn, 3DO, or Jaguar. But the bias towards them persisted into this gen which became their saving grace.

Also, I wonder why a lot of newly registred users showed up after e3 2012 to bash Nintendo, hmmm.

Was it better?  I'm genuinely interested now.  Gonna compare them side to side (for my own ease):

Wii / Gamecube:

3D Mario - 2 / 1

2D Mario - 1 / 0

Paper Mario - 1 / 1

Mario Kart - 1 / 1

Mario Party - 2 / 4

3D Zelda - 2 / 2

2D Zelda - 0 / 1

3D Metroid - 2 / 2

Pokemon - 1 / 2

Kirby - 2 / 0

Pikmin - 0 / 2

F-Zero - 0 / 1

Star Fox - 0 / 2

Battalion Wars - 1 / 1

Fire Emblem - 1 / 1

Super Smash Bros. - 1 / 1

WarioWare - 1 / 1

3D Wario - 0 / 1

2D Wario - 1 / 0

Donkey Kong - 1 / 1

Luigi - 0 / 1

By my count that's 20 for Wii, 26 for Gamecube.  Even if you take into account that not every Nintendo fan is going to like every one of those franchises, it's still not really 'many times over'.

I'm glad you think the Wii is a good generation for Nintendo fans, I think it was too.  But I consider myself to be a somewhat 'core' Nintendo fan (I like most if not all of their first party franchises) and I think the Gamecube was much better.  Aside from new IP's like Pikmin, there were Star Fox AND F-Zero games, decent versions of a lot of their franchises (Double Dash, Melee etc.) and just a general 'catering to everything'.  The only thing they kind of abandoned that gen was 2D platformers (no Mario, no Wario, and an iffy DK game).  The Wii has been better for things like 2 exceptional quality 3D Mario games etc., but the lack of a Star Fox or F-Zero still gets me!

im a core Nintendo fan and I like the GC better, please dont speak for us all

OT I think what the guy is trying to say, is that Ninty fans kinda gave it a free pass, which is silly. Ninty fans like Ninty games

I think Ninty fans give games like Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Wii Fit free passes just because they swell the demographic of the Wii when what they actually should want is more real Ninty games and new Ninty core ips that are more like the core ips on the other consoles.

I don't think Sony fans would give Sony a free pass for what Nintendo has pulled off with Wii ( and with what Microsoft is trying to pull off with Kinect and all its branching out to have all these entertainment partners on xbox).  Sony seems to respect that its audience are real gamers more than Ninty and Microsoft.

I have to take issue with the "Family Console" thing what Nintendo fans wanted was a console that was chock full of as many core games as the NES and SNES for the past two gens, they wanted Final Fantasy back as an exclusive on their console, and I really doubt the fanbase that made the original "Conker's Bad Fur Day" and "Perfect Dark" two of the biggest games of their time were really that concerned with having a family console.  I would say there would only be a handful of Nintendo fans saying after the success of the Super Nintendo and  prior to the success of the Wii as a family console that what they most wanted in Wii was a family console.

Neither Conker's Bad Fur Day nor Perfect Dark ranked particularly high among the "biggest games of their time", your exaggeration is egregious in this case.

Conker's Bad Fur Day got a 9.9 from IGN and Perfect Dark got a 9.8.

What in the Yankee Doodle Dandy has that got to do with anything? You established pretty clearly in your previous statement that you were referring to sales, in that they were phenomena made by fans, not by critics.

Nintendo instituted Saturo Iwata shortly after Gamecube launched. He is a Blue Ocean strategy guy and tasked the creative folks at Nintendo to come up with something new. He also saw Microsoft entering the competition and the existing gameplace become even more Red.

He foresaw that competing in that kind of market meant spending more at higher risk to have best product to be able to compete for gamer time. While I agree with Nintendo's decisions on a business level and their numbers certainly back up their decision, I as a gamer, I also dislike that Nintendo doesn't commit their full focus and resources on gaming experiences for what are now labelled as the "core" gamers or gaming enthusiasts.

The fact is that even the worst imaginable Mario Party game, like the one released on DS out sold any Zelda, Metroid, or even Halo game.

Why the heck should Nintendo as a business spend 5+ years making multiple Zelda type games when minimal investment games like Mario Kart sell 20+ million copies and Zelda is lucky to sell 3-4 million.

...

All that said aside, investors are stupid and listen to stupid analysts and make bets based on greed. They know how to make money whether there is a steep rise or decline. I don't like stupid greedy investors that care more about money than the health of the industry in which they invest and make money.

Even so and regardless of your fanboy status you can't expect investors to maintain stock price value when Nintendo looses 500-700 million dollars and Sony loses 10 billion dollars in one year.

Perfect Dark finished in the Top 20 games on Nintendo 64 and if I substitute Golden Eye for Conker, it finished in the Top 3.  And the N64 saw many of the leading mature themed games of its time have a successful run on the console like Killer Instinct, Resident Evil, and though it came out towards the end of the console's lifespan explaining its sales, Conker did about as well on N64 as most of the core games on Wii with a much smaller user base.  Also, if you look at the Top 20 Nintendo 64 games, except for the Pokemon Stadium and Mario Party games, N64's Top 20 is stocked with mainly core games.  There's no real reason to surmise from that that N64 gamers were mainly looking for a family oriented console that would have casual gaming be its main focus.

The prime theme of the N64 was that the "real" Nintendo audience continued to decline just as it did after the SNES, then Nintendo was caught, software-wise, mid-transition with the GameCube, creating a device that pleased no-one from the N64 epoch but also failed to draw back the old Nintendo fans. Wii succeeded in re-inspiring the lapsed gamers whom Nintendo had been ignoring since the NES era.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

You always seem to be speaking of a subset of Nintendo fans who behave whichever way is convenient for your strawman arguments. As Khuutra already pointed out, your CBFD and PD claim is nonsense.

With Nintendo's sales going up with the Wii it's pretty clear that Nintendo did more things right with the Wii than with the GameCube. This includes sales of Nintendo's core IPs. Pretty much everything sold more than on the GameCube, so it's preposterous to argue that the Wii is less of a gamer console than the GameCube.

Except for the fact that its Top Ten is dominated by the likes of Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and Wii Fit Plus.

But I doubt that they drew back many of the gamers that followed Square and Final Fantasy to the Playstation from the Super Nintendo.
