Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ratchet & Clank:TOD (my first mini review)

I've had this game for since it launch (or very close) not to sure why i decided to put it back in. As soon as started playing it i was amazed with how well this game as held up over time. You would be happy to go and but this game at full price now, 2nd thing that makes itself known its that it's running at a very smooth frame rate.

Graphics:

This is the first thing that you notice its bright and flavorfull. It may have the highest ploy count but it looks good switch is what everybody wants yeah? When you kill enemies you do not get blood rather a glittering supply of nuts and bolts coming at you which is silky smooth. Even while spinning the camera around you at a high speed nothing really seems to lag or slow down. Thats amazing for a game that come out in 2008 in itself.

Gameplay:

Strait off the bat you know is a high paced(TPS platformer?). If it's your first time playing a R&C then it's going to take awhile to get used to how much you have to do at once, jumping, aiming, shooting while avoiding shots from the enemies. They've done OK with weapons, you can upgrade them with nuts and bolts that you get but if you choose to use a weapon more than others the thats upgrades over time. I dont think they really thought about when they decided to bring in some of the weapons they feel useless towards the end of the game, like the Razor claws, you want to use them but when you get them you will most likely die if you try kill more than two people at once.

Some other weapons, you over use because you feel you do not have that many other choices, theres lots to choose from but most do not feel effective. You find yourself using the bee swarm more than most it seems to buy you some time you use everything else. Also the items i felt where useless most of the time i used Mr.Zurton a couple of times, that was closer to the end just to keep the little enemies away from you while you try to fight the bosses. While using predictor missiles i found my hand cramping trying to hold L1,L2 and R1 while trying to avoid everything else. The camera works fine 90% of the time, until you get caught in a corner it gets jammed and you jump around like a crazy man, hoping for the best.

With the platforming, i had fun almost the whole game. It leaves plenty of room for mistakes in general. The biggest beef i had with it, You would be running there'd be a tiny gap and you fall through it and die. There was plenty of times that i got close to throwing the control and swearing at the game. The health bar seemed to have no affect on how much damaged you could take, even with upgrading armor, no matter how far you're into the game get hit six times your dead.

Storyline:

The storyline keeps you interested enough to keep playing, its nothing out of the blue, but does the job. The last three - four hours of the game does feel like they run out of ideas of what to do, and they lead you on a goose chase with big battle after big battle after big battle. It does get repetitive i almost had to force myself to finish the game, because it felt like i should have finished it hours ago. At least when you get to the end it does leave you a semi cliff hanger making you want to know whats going to happen in the next game.

Cut scenes:

I am not sure if it was my Ps3 or what was going on. The first couple were fine but the farther into the game i got, the video and audio for so far out that its was almost unbearable, the video would get up for three seconds behind the audio. It did not let you feel what was happening in the story leaving you feel instant and bored/annoyed that you try to work at whats happening before its happening.

Final comment:

This game is a fun game, with some annoying camera angles. It's a beauiful game to look at with almost no slow down in frame rate. I just wished they spent a little more time with when they brought in different weapons you they didnt become useless so fast. I will be buying the next game in the series.

My Score
8.5

Its a good game but imo its sequel A Crack in Time is better. Still, this released before the majority of great exclusives arrived on the ps3 so it was one of the best games for a while (along with MGS4), and yes I agree - its still pretty brilliant.

Your review is reasonably good. You did a good job of mentioning what you found good in the game and what was bad.  Couple of minor criticisms. Firstly, you could possibly provide a bit more detail in each of the sections to describe to describe to someone what its about. I.e. with the story you give good detail about how you felt about the story but you havent mentioned whats going on - R&C (and Qwark) o try and find Ratchets origins, or R&C go from planet to planet defeating enemies etc. With the gameplay, you could mention that you buy and upgrade weapons, there are puzzle and ship elements to the game, etc. Secondly you have mentioned a number of weapons but not detailed what they are and how they work (i.e. Mr Zurkon - which is what, or the Razor claws - how do they work) - I have played the game before and understand them, someone who hasnt may not.

Those are some minor changes I would have made but thats me and you dont have to listen to me if you disagree. Otherwise, pretty good.

Personally, I love the story of R&C. Its not the most original with the Ratchet and Clank (and sometimes Qwark) save the galaxy from the evil Dr ...... but the way its delivered and the hilarious interactions between R & C & Q are some of the funniest in games. That and the freakily creative weapons . Its one of the reasons I love this series.

I love R&C, Tools of Destruction was my favourite this generation, not having clank most of the time in ACiT really hurt the game for me :(

Good review! :D

Tools of Destruction came out in 2007.

Worst Ratchet and Clank in the series in my opinion, too much shooter, i even like Deadlocked better (atleast that one was hilarious and focused on arena type gameplay)

Just my personal feedback on this review, don't take it too personally if you don't like what I'm saying:

It was pretty decent, but I think you went too methodically through it. Rather than breaking it up and having a section-by-section breakdown of your feedback on the game, I think it would benefit more from having you flow organically from point to point.

So for example, you start off saying how the graphics are great and how everything stays smooth even when there's a lot of stuff going on on screen. This would lead perfectly into starting to describe the gameplay, how it can get hectic at times and it'll take a while to get used to shooting/jumping/avoiding shots, rather than just lumping it under the sub-title "gameplay", if you get what I'm saying?

I also feel like you could do to be a bit more concise with some of your points. You mention the weapon system being "okay" - that's fine, I've heard similar criticism from Gamespot in their review. But you kind of get lost in all these different points about the upgrading system causing you to stick with some weapons, later weapons being useless, some weapons being tricky to use. I think you might need to just plan a little ahead so that you don't make the same point multiple times and get your message across a little more clearly. (Side note: Mr. Zurkon is the most useful weapon in the game imo! I always have him out by my side to help with firepower :P)

Also, spelling & grammar. It's just worth running the whole thing through a spell-check and getting someone to proof read it.

Please don't take all this criticism as me suggesting it was a bad review though, I enjoyed reading it, just thought these things could help you improve your next review. Especially if you get around to reviewing "A Crack in Time" next, which is the best game in the series imo! :P

I'd like to read your review on A Crack in Time which I thought was considerably better.

Couldnt agree with you more. My 2nd best R&C game ever across all the consoles.
