Journey and Flower creator thatgamecompany has raised $5.5 million in new venture capital funding that will allow it to release games independently. According to a post from co-founder Jenova Chen, a new partnership with Benchmark Capital will allow thatgamecompany to continue to bring “emotionally compelling interactive entertainment to players worldwide.”

While thatgamecompany’s previous releases have been exclusive to Sony, this new partnership will enable the studio “to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact,” according to Chen.

In a separate blog post, Benchmark Capital general partner Mitch Lasky notes that he will be joining thatgamecompany’s board of directors with a goal to “provide the resources for TGC to remain independent, so they can innovate with complete autonomy from the pressures of platforms and publishers.”

Lasky notes that he believes thatgamecompany “can reach the broadest possible audience if that vision can be fully controlled by the company” and that the studio can “bring to games a little of what Pixar films brought to animation -- emotional depth, engagement with fully-realized worlds, and a strong sense of authorship.”

Already posted, only not sure if it was posted this year =p.

Imagine how good their games would look like on PC (well.. other than their very first game Cloud)

As expected, was a three game deal. Sony should of acquired them.

Did they WANT to be acquired though?

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I guess the Wii U has woo'ed another developer over to it!

Where did you get that from?

Probably not, I can see why they'd wanna go indie or reach more platforms with the way the industry is now, with the Mobiles and the Facebook games and whatnot. Would of been a good move for Sony though.

Good to hear it.

@spurgeonryan:

The fact that they "only" had a 3 game deal with Sony.

They are going multiplate right around the time that the Wii U is coming out. What else would be the reason?

There deal with Sony ended. They're an indie dev so most likely to make games for either XBLA/PSN, IOS/ANDRIOID, PC or all of the above. Maybe on all the next gen consoles too, including the Wii U if they have a system as sophisticated as XBLA/PSN/Steam.
