Forums - Sony Discussion - Discussing PS4 hardware and manufacturing price

My analysis on PS4, expected components and costs:

Processor:

Sony will not abandon the cell processor, they invested billions in it and all that would go to waste if they didnt use Cell, unless AMD offers 2014 technology for a late 2013 console.

PS3 has 1PPE and 8SPE, PS4 will atleast have 4PPE and 32SPEs, Cell 2 will be baked on 22nm.

Price: around $/€100

Ram:

Fast Ram is so cheap nowadays, even the WiiU will feature 1.5GB ram. You can find 4GB Corsair Vengeance ram for 25 euros.

GPU

PS3s RSX is based of a Nvidia 7800GT, the Nvdia card was 300 pounds at launch:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/nVidia-GeForce-7800-GT-Reference-Card_PC-Component_review

At its launch PS3 got a high mid range GPU, the RSX in the PS3 only cost 129$, significantly lower then the price of a 7800GT

I predict that PS4 will have a HD7870 with 2GB VRAM. It costs less than what a 7800GT had cost at launch. In Europe you can find a HD7870 for 300 euros. Ofcourse this is not the price Sony will pay for the GPU, they will get a huge discount and by the time PS4 releases Sony could pay as little as 100 euros.

Bluray drive

Sony will use an upgraded bluraydrive enabling 4 layered BDs up to 100GB per disc. Future PS4 could benefit from this size and to make the movies and sound lossless.

Price: 25 euros/dollars

Bill of Material costs:

CPU: $€ 100

GPU $€100

RAM: $€25

Optical drive: $€25

Circuits, motherboard and other parts:

$€ 100

Total manufacturing price: $€350

Lets factor in 150 dollars for assembly, marketing and transport and total price is $€ 500.

PS4 will be released at $/€499, Sony could turn break-even right after launch.  A huge difference with PS3, only the BOM for PS3 was 840 dollars, marketing, research and transport included the price for PS3 was probably higher then 1000$: http://www.edge-online.com/news/isuppli-60gb-ps3-costs-840-produce

I don't think Sony should release PS4 at a lower price, it will result in them losing money and people now are willing to pay more then 500 dollars for tablets and smartphones. In 2006 there were no smartphones or tablets for 600 bucks and PS3 at 599$ was odd and expensive at the time.

Please post your expectations of the manufacturing costs and wich parts will be used in the PS4. I put a lot of time thinking and examining the best options.

Price NEEDS to be $399 or LESS.
they may loose a tiny amount on every unit at first but that money will come back with a huge install base.
Release with Uncharted 4, GT6 & Killzone 4 - t2 of them will be MAJOR sellers and Killzone will sell a ton potential being the first FPS. pure profit will be made from all 3 titles.

Release at over $399 would be a huge mistake. The compatition will be cheaper and the brand is already hurt. Sony need the Ps4 to be big. it wont be at $500.

remeber the state Sony is in right now. they cant have the PS4 sell like the PS3. they need PS1/PS2 market Domanance/ Sales

They will not repeat the mistake as the PS3 launchprice becuase this time they can't "afford" it. I think it will be $399,- max.

Sony need to release that bad boy at $400!

if it's below $400 then it will be a weak bullsh!t ass console graphics wise

Nintendo is going to launch Wii U at $250 or $300 MAX!

M$ would be smart to release their console at $400

you heard it here 1st people ;)

EDIT: well actually i've said it before in past posts but whatever..

Remember, PS4 releasing at 400$ doesn't mean it will be a weak console, it could have a high manufacturing price and they sell it at a 100$ loss. Can you please post your expected parts in the PS4?

eh... sony *will* abandon the cell as ibm has also... also there isn't really a "cell 2" but an 8i. shows your technical knowledge...

on top of that your post heavily relies on wishes, guesses and maybes - what do you want to tell us? to make the world behave you want it to? your post is technically rediculous when combining non-standard-pc hardware with standard-hardware while totally disregarding the architecture of all consoles until today.

next time tag your posts with "i wish that" and let out "will have" and "will be".

and yes, sony will of course abandon the cell because next time they have to deliver a platform developers will like.

Wow.. you better brace yourself for some major disappointment.  I seriously doubt any of that will happen.

Koni, can you please post your expected manufacturing cost and the parts that will be used on the PS4? I'm curious what you think.

Next time I will tag my posts exactly how I want. These are my expectations, that should be clear enough just by readding my post. If you do not like my expectations then post your own list of to be used components capisce?

I just added the number 2 to indicate itll be a newer version, it has nothing to do with my technical knowledge. The 8i is used in supercomputers and blade servers and will be 5 years old by the time PS4 launches. Who says they could not use a revised version of the Cell or 8i with more PPEs and SPEs?

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/23/ibm-powerxcell-8i-processor-said-to-be-last-of-its-kind-but-cel/

IBM Vice President of Deep Computing David Turek has confirmed that the company's current PowerXCell-8i processor will be the last of its kind, and that there will not be a successor with dual PowerPC processors and 32 SPEs as originally planned. Slightly less clear, however, is the future of the Cell program in general, which will apparently live on in "another form" -- to which Turek reportedly added, somewhat vaguely, "the future is hybrid," although we're fairly certain he's not talking about cars.

Interview was 2,5 years ago, development of PS4 was already in full force by then. For sure Sony will do something with the Cell or its remnants, unless AMD offers something better.

And exactly what are you talking about standard pc hardware? A HD7870 will not necessarily be called an HD7870, just like the RSX is not called a 7800GT.

Sony won't launch the PS4 for more van €$00, that would kill them off completely.
