Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Geoff Keighley says Unreal Engine 4 wont run on Wii U

While not a huge suprise if it doesn't run UE4, it will still get great games running on UE3, CE3, FB2 etc.

This. It looks to me as though any reliance on a proprietry engine was only a factor last gen. because devs didn't have experience making HD games work. This time around, well companies like Konami are making their own.

No worries.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I dont care about how pretty a game looks or if it runs on certain hardware!! ALL I CARE ABOUT IS GREAT GAMEPLAY! Look crysis 1 & 2 looked pretty but in the end are forgotten easily

i bet you wouldn't like to see mario galaxy 3 with graphics of the first 3d games. it's what nintendo fans always say (since this gen) but i dont believe them. i bet if they would get the same games with better graphcis they would be happy with it. like nintendo fans (i was one of them, my two favourite games of all time are n64 games) who had the n64 were happy with it as well. then you get a console not so powerful and from one to the next day graphic isn't important^^

and don't say "but other consoles don't have these great nintendo games". yes this is true, but nintendo wouldn't stop making mario or zelda with more power, they would do the same games just better looking. metroid prime would be still there, it would be still have great gameplay only with a better looking world. and if you really don't care how a castle in zelda is looking, if their is bad aliasing and tearing or not, if the sun is buidling great shadows on the walls through the leaves of the wood in front of the castle or if there would be great particles running through a cornfield, write them a mail and say you want to go back to the old 3d graphics to reduce costs for them.

and crysis forgotten? it's one of the most discussed games of the last ten years and people still speak about it in forums every day. some because they wonder why and some because they are still impressed about what they saw when they played it.

I really don't care. The sooner devs stop making a game and then putting it in a stupidly expensive, bland engine which cuts off variety and inginutiy, the better.

We need more Rayman Origins and less generic shooter #275

That's really funny.

I tought the ue4 demo ran on a kpple r of nvidia, i think it was pretty obvious that i wont support it fully, bu like ocnosles this gen with ue3 they will make a watred down version for them. Anyway judgiing also by whta they said about the other consoles, ue4 would be more for pc.

Is Geoff Knightly's NO to the question (Can you give us a hint) or NO to the QUESTION (Can the Wii-U run UE4 engine)?

For anyone who wonders about reports, I always say "Consider the source." For Nintendo news, I am skeptical of places that (a) value technology over all else and (b) break news that turns out to be false. Interpret that as you will.

Finally, did anyone notice the Twitter posts in the OP were not in order by time stamp?

We shall see what we shall see.

Will UE4 games be easily portable to an UE3 engine?

UE4 is said to be easy to use, speeding up dev-time and cutting costs. A lot of developers will be using this. Be a shame if they abandon the Wii U, just as they did the Wii.

Mike Capps did say that, but Nintendo apparently has upped the specs somewhat since then, so who knows?

He tweeted it just yesterday. This basically confirms that UE4 isn't gonna be on the WiiU-U. I never really believed all these BS rumors that Nintendo upped the specs of the Wii-U (dispite me wanting to). Even Digital Foundy wrote an artical saying that it's extremely unlikely the rumors we've been hearing are true about the increase in specs.

GDC was in March and Nintendo up until now says they don't want anyone talking about wii u specs. So it could still run it. It is more powerful than the other systems says gearbox.

You're right that Gearbox said it's powerful, but he said flat-out that the Wii-U is gonna be an UE3 machine. I'm sorry, but you can't get around this fact. The Wii-U is not going to be able to run Unreal Engine 4.

Unless you know what is running the wii u it not can be proven. Unreal 4 is not out. Just like how at the start of this gen nothing run on unreal 3 because it was not out.

as far as i remember, the best looking games this generation were buildt with custom engines anyway, why would i care about news that are really only useful for developers.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

It is more expensive than UE3 for developers. Of course Epic wants that the Developer that now use an UE3-Engine switch to the more expensive UE4-Engine.

But it is almost for sure that no one of the next-gen consoles could really use UE4, they will have enough to do to run UE3 with all features, Vsync and anti-alias. That is why Epic desperate tried to convince Sony, Nintendo and MS to use expensive hardware so that UE4 makes a little sense on these consoles, but failed obviously for good reasons.

So Epic will accomodate the UE4-Engine to the real hardware, and not the other way round.
