Forums - Gaming Discussion - Unreal Engine 4 vs. Playstation 3 games (God of War III, Ascension, Uncharted 3, The Last of Us etc)

Next gen will be disastrous for lots of development studios I think. Seeing how many of them have gone under this past gen because development has become so costly, with them having to sell insane amounts of copies just to break even... Next gen will be much worse. Also, game prices will probably go up another 10 Dollars/Euros.

I'm not that impressed with UE4, the Uncharted engine looks and plays miles better. Not to mention how excited I am for The Last of Us, possibly the most beautiful game Ive seen.

The PS3 fans on this site are a totally different breed. Naughty Dog engine looks better than UE4? No, simply wrong. Not in an that's your opinion way. In a this is a statement of fact way. One is a current gen engine, the other is a next gen engine. Edit: You know what I'm even going to take issue with this statement. Engines themselves don't look better. It is how developers use them. However obviously a current gen engine isn't going to be able to produce anywhere near the visuals of a new engine for PC/next-gen consoles.

The ND engine PLAYS better than UE4? So an ENGINE! plays better than one you have never played or seen any gameplay from? My mind is still boggling at the statement that an engine plays miles better than another one.

The Last of Us the most beautiful game ever? No. It is possibly the best looking console game (although we have yet to see gameplay) but compared to PC titles? Nope totally outclassed.

Honestly it's just ridiculous. I seriously hope a mod sees that comment and realises what it blatantly is.

To Cheebee - A lot of what this engine is meant to do is actually reduce the time taken for things. You can read it in their big long PR exercise. Obviously they will be overstating it however it sounds like a lot of the new features will make development of certain parts cheaper.

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

We're at a point where screenshots mean nothing and can't do justice to visuals, wait for everything to be in movement.

This.  I browse the web on the same HDTV that I game on.  Time and time again, I've seen pics of Uncharted, Super Mario Galaxy, God of War, Xenoblade, Alan Wake, etc. that make me say, "WOW!  That game looks amazing!"  Then, I remember that I own those games and that the pics don't represent the game's quality at all.  It gets annoying after a while.  All of these graphics comparisons that come down to who can post the best bullshit picture.

I just can't imagine how U4 will look when I'm actually playing, but those screeshots look like CGI, so I'd say it's a very noticeable step up, though perhaps less than from last gen to this one.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Those PS3 textures are a blurry, muddy mess that are at best low to medium detail compared to PC games. Compared to UE4 and DX11? No contest.

I agree. Those images released for UE4 aren't too impressive, but I don't think it's fair to judge UE4 based on those images. I'd wait for an actual demoing of the engine first.

Food for thought: Shove an apple in your brain

I think that the idea of the topic is that UE4 is not a big jump. If this is the next gen (I'm sure it won't), I don't see people buying expensive new consoles for such a small improvement. Of course, UE4 screens looks way better than PS3 games, but if you look at the difference betwen PS3 and PS2 (GoW 3 vs. GoW 2), it's a bigger change.

Even when we talk about GoW 3 vs. 2, it's not a big jump if you compare with the PS2/PS1 transition. Kratos looks amazing in close scenes on PS3, but it's just hard too see all the details in the majority of the game. And we'll remain limited by 1080p TVs.

Those shots don't really show off any of the new capabilities of the Unreal Engine 4 at all.

Those images could be reproduced on DX9. The only way to truly see the difference would be in a video with things like real time lighting and shadowing all well animations and texture detail.

Try viewing the pictures in full, also when was the last time you got those eyes examined?
