Showing someone "hey i did this random thing!" just doesn't really excite me even a little bit. Unless the achievment unlocks something in the game DURING THE 1ST PLAYTHROUGH, i just don't understand the fascination behind it. |
Trophies and achievements may seem pointless (and ultimately, they are), however one cannot deny their strong social and psychological aspect.
Many players team up and work together to meet some goals and earn them. Many others feel challenged by their friends scores and will pursue them, trying to achieve more trophies/gamerscore, or at least get theirs to a respectable level. This includes buying more games and dedicating more time to a single platform (can build brand loyalty on those unwilling to split scores on PS3 and 360, for example - one will buy all multiplat titles on a single console they gain trophies on). Also, many people have obsessive behaviors, become addicted, or hunt down those trophies just out of boredom.
Those who dislike the system can simply turn off notifications of trophy/achievement earned and play like it never existed. I see no harm in trophies and tend to believe it's a plus to gaming.
In Nintendo's shoes I would certainly join this bandwagon, however Nintendo is Nintendo and they seem to do whatever the hell they want (and it works for them anyway lol).
