But we're going to win the EC, so all will  be well

Try to survive the group stage first :P

As far as I can remember back, the Netherlands have survived the group stage everytime since 1988. The streak might be longer, but I can't be bothered to look it up. Meanwhile, Germany got knocked out in the group stage in two of the last three Euros. In the more recent one out of these two failures, Germany was in the same group as the Netherlands.

What I am trying to say is that you should be happy if your team manages to finish third in the group. Keep your goals realistic.

Germany won the EC trophy more often than any other country. So according to your flawed logic from achievements and failures of the past (with different teams and coaches), the most realistic goal would be to expect another trophy for Germany.

Um, no. Recent history holds more value than total history.

When we put it into World Cup terms, my logic wouldn't consider Uruguay a serious contender for the trophy, but your logic would.

It's currently the best South American team.  Of course they are a serious contender to win it in 2014.

How about we were in the finals 1992 and 2008 and won the trophy in 1996 ?

I know about your appearances in finals, but as a matter of fact, Germany got eliminated twice in the group stage since 1988 and these two times happened rather recently. That's why you are in no position to talk smack about a country that got past the group stage in the last six tournaments.

In 2000, you finished fourth in your group. In 2004, you finished third in your group. In 2008, you finished second in your group. And that was in a very easy group: Croatia, Poland and Austria.

and yet this German team is easily the best since 1996 and far improved from 2000 (no active player left), 2004 (only Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Posolski and Klose still active) and 2008.

And the Dutch team isn't good?

3rd best in the world IMO. So ?

So they'll slaughter Germany.

No team is able to do that at the moment.
The only team that comes close to do that is Spain, but even they would need a very, very good day to really "slaughter" us.

Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall.

Naja wenn du das sagst, kann ich dir schlecht widersprechen, da Österreicher sich mit beidem bestens auskennen.

Never said that Germany will win the trophy. Never said they're the best team around. Never said that it's impossible for the Netherlands to successfully finish the group. I was actually showing respect to Denmark and Portugal with my initial statement.
Exact opposite of Hochmut don't you think ?

VG Chartz then were more easier to maneuver to, and the simplistic pages were easier on the browser as well. I think the launch of this site coincided with around the start of the 7th gen which at the time brought a lot of strong personalities. Back then, there were a lot more productive debates and strong discussion on different gaming perspectives. At the time, there actually was a lot more things to talk about.
From what it seems to me, when the rules got a little more stricter (signatures, etc) and it feels like every time there were site changes or updates, we lose of couple of members. I remember one guy who had a signature about which game could save PS3 and every said game gets released, he crossed them out. It was actually funny.

The excitement all kinda died down also because we're near the end of this gen, and the new news are for next gen.

I bet once eighth gen starts, fanboys, debates about sales, games, new releases, and all the excitement will all come back. Old members may come back, new members will join in to give in their two cents. And spammers will all be there to rattle the cage.

@superchunk
Damn it. I just revived Gilgamesh's thread, too.

I remember VG Chartz use to be the place I'd go looking for video game news, we use to be so quick with that. Back when users were able to submit news articles and we got points for it. I went from checking my video game news at N4G to only checking vg chartz news then having to go back to N4G now.

No, I don't think so.

The exact opposite would be if you were seriously concerned about Germany surviving the group stage, because that isn't a given considering the teams that are in this group.

It's without a doubt the strongest group, but confidence is not the same as Hochmut.
We have a good record against Portugal recently, we achieved a tie against Denmark with our B-squad in a friendly and we comfortably beat the Netherlands (where admittedly some key players were missing).
