Update: PS3 price cut and lower hardware sales contribute to $5.74 billion loss for Sony Corp

Sony's Consumer Products and Services division suffered an operating loss of ¥229.8 billion ($2.8bn) for the full year ended March 2012, compared to a profit of ¥10.8 billion in 2011.

Sales were down 18.5 per cent to ¥3.13 trillion ($38.2 billion) from ¥3.84 trillion, with all segments of the division - games, PCs, LCD televisions and digital cameras hit by poor sales.

Hardware sales were down across the business compared to last year, with Sony selling 13.9 million PlayStation 3 units compared to 14.3 million the previous year.

PSP hardware sales were down from 8 million to 6.8 million and PlayStation 2 console sales dropped from 6.4 million to 4.1 million.

Software sales for the PlayStation 3 increased from 147.9 million to 156.6 million, while PSP game sales fell from 46.6 million to 32.2 million. PlayStation 2 game sales dropped from 16.4 million to 7.9 million units.

Predictions for hardware sales for the next financial year are also low, with combined PlayStation 3 and PS2 sales of 16 million units compared to the 18 million sold in the closing financial year. PSP (including PS Vita) hardware sales are expected to rise from 6.8 million to 16 million. Packaged software sales are forecast to remain the same with 196.7 million units.

Sony's price reduction of the PlayStation 3 and lower sales of the PlayStation 2 were singled out specifically in the games business.

For the entire Sony corporation, sales were ¥6.49 trillion ($79.1bn) for the full year, with a net loss of ¥456.7 billion ($5.74 billion), compared to a loss of ¥259.6 billion the previous year.

Can it be that they are including all the FY2011 vitas in the FY2012 prediction? The numbers could make more sense this way.

It's 16m for Vita & PSP together...which I don't buy honestly. PSP is dying pretty quickly now even in Asia, its down by 1/2 over Q1 2011 now that Vita is out in the West. I think PSP could do 4-5m globally if Vita continues to sell slowly, with Vita doing a bit more than that, say 7-8m. If they kill PSP by cutting the Vita price massively, it will be more like 10-11m Vitas along with 2-3m PSPs.

I guess I'll go on record and put PSP & PS Vita at 13m for the FY 4m / 9m with a price cut for Vita, and 3m / 12m for PS2 / PS3. I don't see either combo quite reaching 15m though. PS3 once did 14.6m in a year (Oct 2009 - September 2010) and has been slowly dipping since despite Move, price cuts, games, etc. The PS3 purchasing rate is down to about 2.4 games per user in the past year as well, they're entering the danger zone now. Once that rate gets below 2 games per user it doesn't really matter how many users you have (see Wii, PS2, DS, PS1, etc). PS3 could be at 76m * 1.8 games in the March 2013 year based on the latest drop, about 137m games, down 20m from this FY. If it holds a bit better, sw will be flat for the year, if its worse, the drop will have more dramatic implications.

March 2012 Shipment LTDs:

PS2 - 155.0m  / 1537m games

DS - 151.52m  / 900m games

Wii - 95.85m  / 818m games

PSP - 76.3m / 331m games

X360 - 67.2m / not provided

PS3 - 63.9m  / 595m

3DS - 17.14m / 45m

Vita - 1.5m (estimated on my part)  / 4m?

I suppose its worth noting that Sony's hw forecasts are pretty good, but if you look back PSP / PS3 were both projected to be way higher than their actual performance in the initial full year of the cycle. Sony projected PS3 at 14m in FY 3/2008 back when they thought PS3 would do what PS2 did, but it ended up at 9.1m...even with the price going from $600/$500 to $500/$400.

Software wise they're doing really good. They sold 13.9m PS3s, just as they expected. I think the last 2 years and a pricecut this year will show that PS3 has its peak around 14m.

Disappointing. I guess this means PS3 is overtracked by VGC?

PS3's LTD at 28th April: 64,136,242

63,9M at 1sr April according to Sony's figures, not overtracked here, maybe even undertracked.
