Not sure everyone is aware of the last 12 months financial shenanigans...

A year ago Sony projected a profit for this year of $963m

By Jun 2011 they revised to a loss of $1.12bn

By Feb 2012 they revised to a loss of $2.76bn

In April 2012 this was revised to a $6.4bn loss

Thats weird.

it's not weird at all, they didn't expect the yen/euro situation which effected almost all companies in Japan and no one could foresee the tsunami, and the last revision was writing off the tax credit that they lost

Dont forget the massive flooding in Thailand where Sony, and lot of Japanese offshore manufacturing is located...which S&P noted when they downgraded....Not trying to make excuses for the bad numbers but you have some extreme one off events that happened in the last year for many Japanese companies which are not going to repeat themselves.

yeah that was the tsunami, shit I forgot all about the earthquake in Japan but that was the same event wasn't it??

PS3 will be shipping the most consoles this quarter, again.

This is actually the most interesting of Sony's quarterly results, because we'll get a forecast for PS3 / PSP / PS2...and theoreitcally Vita (PS4 fcst can't be totally ruled out either, but its very unlikely), for the year to March 2013. I say theoretically Vita but since it has a lot of digital sw they don't provide sw figures (shipments) as of last quarter - so they may be hesitant with hw too.

PSP / PS2 should be forecast way down for the year, PS3 probably a little bit down too (I think 12m or 13m will be their forecast, maybe 11m if they think the console market is due for an off year, 14m with a big price cut). Wii U should hurt PS3 over the holidays at least, Wii & Wii U combined can certainly be at 6m-7m in Q4, vs. the 5.6m or whatever Wii did in Q4 2011. 3DS should also cannibalize everything to a certain extent this Dec in Japan, its not just going to slaughter DS / PSP / Vita, not when 2D Mario, and whatever else is coming will all be pushing it even beyond its current level of demand.
