How is that particularly relevant? DQX's budget is surely larger than DQIX and won't even come close to matching. How is that a wise business decision? (keep in mind, it's not the fact that it's on the Wii but rather the gameplay choices and changes they're making to the static series)

If DQX is a success, they have subscription fees to generate revenue. Final Fantasy XI didn't sell millions of copies, but yet all those subs generated more revenue for Square than any other FF title. It's a smart business decision, especially considering this game isn't really aimed at the west either. Japan is going to eat this up.

You keep using revenue, and I'm not disputing the amount of revenue. I think it will do well there, but it's net will be far lower. Honestly, Japan has never really picked a console MMO and supported to mass success. I don't think DQ9 will do much more than FFXI which is a success but only relative to itself. If DQ9 did similar numbers, it would be a massive disappointment especially as the series has been in a upward trend.

Look at FF13, sure it didn't just completely flop but it certainly wasn't an outrageous success. On top of the lost customers as DQ9 will piss off the majority of the DQ fanbase.

Final Fantasy XI was supported heavily by Japan, and it still is to this day. A majority of them are console players which is why SE has stated that they can't really do any graphic upgrades on the game due to the hardware limitations at this point.

Our definitions here are quite different. While having 100,000 subscribers worldwide is stil quite the feat for FFXI, there's even a smaller number using console versions. Even smaller number of those console users are Japanese. That's hardly heavily support, and it will need to do a whole lot better than FFXI ever did. Especially as the costs of developing DQX.

Anywho, this has gone way off topic. :D

Of course now the game isn't as supported as it was say 5 years ago, but we have to remember that FFXI is about 10 years old now. Also due to Final Fantasy XIV, the production for new FFXI expansions has basically stopped. Many moons ago they had over 1 million subs, and at $12.95 per month thats a ton of money. That's not even factoring in token sales, expansion sales, product keys, extra characters and more. I do agree that since DQX is only on a console at this point that it will not be as successful as XI was, but I still do believe it has the potential to be a mega hit in terms of revenue for the company.

We know that isn't true. Wada was quoted in 2003 saying there were 200k subs and it wasn't until this point that they finally made money on it. In 2006, there were 200-300k subs. It's wiki, but still.

Keep in mind, we're speaking in such relative terms as Dragon Quest is far more popular than FF in Japan.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

As of 2008, in an announcement for three additional expansions in development, SE noted Final Fantasy XI still has a strong user base of around 500,000 subscribers. In April 2009, Square Enix announced that the total number of active characters exceeded 2 million for the first time.

Can't seem to recall the article where I seen the 1M subs. I'll try to find it, but more now i'll post that. Which is also on the wiki. It still gives the idea at how successful XI was. 2003 it was made into a profitable game, and it's now 2012 (even though subs have drastically dwindled). All of those years of monthly subs is amazing profit.

Also we've been speaking about this for so long I can't remember how we got onto the topic. lol.

Anyways I hope Versus is at XIII in some capacity or another.

This doesn't confirm anything.

My source says that SE are planning to re-announce the game as Final Fantasy XV at E3.

Do your source says if will remain exclusive?

Unfortunately not.

And no, my source isn't IGN.

Oh. Do you believe it could end as a multiplatform title, I mean with Wii U (Japan, as X360 is dead there).

I think it is likely to go multiplatform, but not with the Wii U. 3rd party exclusives almost non-existent so late into the generation, even if it is still exclusive it wouldn't be as important.

New TR and Sleeping Dogs.... thats far more exciting then Versus, if you ask me

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!
